I would rent at catalina island, there are at least 2 shops there to rent from, I'm sure a google search will bring them up.

unless you also wanted to do a night dive in redondo beach, that is right near manhattan beach, then you could rent at dive-n-surf or sea-d-sea in redondo, sports chalet in torrance, or eco-dive-center in culver city. prices and length of rental will vary, so will availability of gloves, fins, and booties.

Scott,

have you noticed the price/quality factor of the rental gear at Avalon? I'd rent the tank there and the rest at the places you list above. saves time too f you want to get in four dive at the point you have to really make use of every minute. even getting in three dives means not wasting any time

How long will you be in the area? There is a local group that dives locally at night after work and on weekends. It's a very active group that welcomes new people Casino Point is a nice dive spot that you should not miss but there are others that are coser and do not require a boat trip, right up the road from MB is a good nigh dive spot and Pals Verdes is a lot like catalina, same rocks and kelp but with poorer vis.

If you have more question PM me I live and work in the area.

Right now it is kind of hit-or-miss as to when I'm going to be in LA (especially over a weekend). I'm travelling out there quite a bit for work right now. This trip I'm coming in tomorrow (9/21) and will be there through 9/30.

Going weeknight evenings can also be tricky at the moment since I'm not on a hard and fast time schedule.

For this trip, I have pretty much made up my mind to go to Casino Point on Saturday morning (9/24) with some other Scubaboard members. I'm heavily leaning toward renting from Dive N Surf (except for tank & weights which I will get on the island). I'm going to drive over there when I get in tomorrow afternoon and check them out.

Thanks to everybody for all of your help. You kelpers are awesome!

ChrisA has spoken well with good advice.

Now the real question is, do you want to limit your diving to only one day? Why not a beach dive from the mainland. Kings Harbor, Redondo Beach, Palos Verde and malibu are all an easy drive from Manhattan Beach. Island Diver operaters right out of the area too.

Catalina Divers Supply is right at Casino Point if you're diving there...they have everything to rent although the quality of the gear is older. DiveNSurf is one of the closest diveshops to MB and have excellent gear. They also match prices.
