we live on little torch key (just south of big pine). it's expensive, but i love it here. not sure what the marinas charge. the one at the navy base is around $260 mo for a 36', but you have to be active duty or retired to stay there.
as far as schools...well, they are ok i guess. my son goes to regular public school and the daughter goes to a public montessori charter.
yes it does take awhile to get to the mainland from here.
