Where to go from Fort Myers?

Hi everyone,

I hope this type of post isn't too redundant throughout the rest of this forum. I just wanted to get some folks thoughts about something that may (but doesn't have to) include some diving. I'll be going to a short college reunion for a weekend in June at Fort Myers, Fla. I just decided to extend the vacation, and take from Mon thru Sun of that week off as well. I'm trying to decide whether to stay in Florida (either in Ft Myers or go to one of the Florida Keys) or whether to go to somewhere in the Caribbean. Whichever place I end up choosing, it would be nice to do some recreational diving. I'm already certified, and i've been diving in Belize and Solomon Islands, but have never been to the Caribbean nor Florida.

I was hoping to get some thoughts and recommendations about these two vacation options... Thanks, everyone!

Well, it depends who else is going, if anyone, and what kind of budget, and what else you want to do. Do you own equipment or renting?

Staying in Fla would be cheapest... lots of options for Keys and also SE Fla coast wreck diving.
First check out Conch Republic Divers and Silent World in Key Largo, and South Fla Diving Hqtrs in Pompano. Rent a car, no need for passport or customs nightmares.

Or you can fly down to Cozumel, lots of options there.

The Ultimate Getaway livaboard based out of Fort Myers doing trips to the Dry Tortugas is by far your best diving in Florida. Also the healthiest reefs and fish life in Florida. I think it leaves on Thursday night and returns on Sunday.
Otherwise hit the Keys or east coast of Florida.
For most of the diving in the West Coast of Florida the vis is usually poor and reefs are scares, so most divers go for hunting.
