Looking to book a short notice dive trip Feb/March and don't know where to go. Only have a week + a days travel either side. For a change we fancy a shore based holiday this time with hot weather and excellent, safe diving.

So, please, give me some ideas of where to head off to. The world is our lobster!
I'm thinking it will be a tad cold in the Red Sea

How about Papua New Guinea, Rabaul to be exact.
Hot weather, warm water, great vis, awesome reefs.
Check us out at Kabaira Dive.

You're flying out of the UK, so the majority of SB readers view the world from a "North America Centric" angle.

We see the Caribbean as our back yard, just as you view the Red Sea as a commonly traveled zone. Out of Heathrow, the planes run like city busses to Egypt. You have relatively easy access to some great diving.

(Take temperature out of the equation....)To us, diving in a place like the Galapogos is an attainable goal. For you it is like a trip to the dark side of the Moon.

It is a long trip, but you can easily see the well traveled trail left by Brits to Pacific Rim countries. You can't swing a dead cat in the Philippines without hitting a limey.

One of our North American "Holy Grails" is the Maldives. If you run the Germans out of the place, the Brits practically own the joint.

Look at the easy-to-get-to stuff (for you), first. Maldives, Seychelles, the Philippines.

I'm thinking it will be a tad cold in the Red Sea

The Red Sea is universally regarded as having very little temperature swing comparatively. From warmest to coldest, assuming you are talking about water temps, there is only a 9° swing throughout the year. See Weather & Temperature | red-sea-guide.com for a good comarison graphic. The air temp does swing greatly, and as your original post is unclear, maybe you were talking about air temps?

Coming from the UK we would look at Grand Cayman for a week trip, warm weather and great diving. You have lots of options to choose from like sunset house or Compass Point on the east end which is a little more quite and has some of the best diving.
Little Cayman is just another short flight from Grand and has for us some of the best diving in the Caymans and is mainly a dive, dive dive destination.:blinking:

South Africa's East Coast is hot during Feb/Mar and the flight to South Africa is overnight maximizing your holiday time. South Africa is also only two hours ahead of the UK so there is no wasted time being jet lagged.

The diving is amazing with stunning reefs, a huge variety of fish life, excellent macro life plus the chance of seeing some of the oceans biggest - whale sharks, tiger sharks and much more. To add to all this you can visit a game reserve and spot the Big 5 land animals too! There is also horse riding on the beach, hiking in sand dune forests and sundowners watching hippo play.

South Africa is a magical dive destination! Give it a go! Check out Immerse Yourself Safaris at scubasafaris.co.za for more information.

The Caribbean is a safe bet, and both Virgin, BA and the charter companies are offering some good deals. The water temp is around 28C at the moment, so 3mm suits will be more that enough.

Barbados has a direct flight (8 hours from the UK), has some great wrecks, and a diverse marine life, as well as lots to do top side. Business has been slow in this part of the world, so book you hotel / flight as a package and then do a deal with a dive shop. West Coast - try High Tide, South Coast - Eco Dive or Rogers Scuba Shack.

If you are looking for something of the beaten track St. Vincent and the Grenadines offers diving comparable with the Red Sea for diversity / fish life / reef health. Not so many big pelagics but lots of diving, and NO OTHER DIVERS - you'll get the place to your self. 6 on a boat is busy.

Here are some pictures to whet your appetite www.picasawweb.google.com/indigodive click on Marine Environment.

The flight from Barbados is approx GBP100 per person, and you can find accommodation starting from GBP35 per night in a self catering studio.

There are 2 dive shops on the island Indigo Dive and Dive St. Vincent.

The Grenadines are but a short hop away, and if you don't mind some adventure you can plan a multi-center stay....
