Snorkels have turned out to pretty contentious. There are three different threads on the subject right now.

Indeed. When are we getting the dedicated 'Snorkel' forum? Clearly this fits nicely in the 'art of scuba diving' section somewhere between 'scouts in scuba' and 'solo divers'

Honestly if you have managed your air properly you should still have plenty to breathe on the surface if need be, and the easiest method to surface swim is on your back where you need neither snorkel or Reg.

Swimming hard with a single alum 80 tank you should use no more than 10bar in 5 minutes, if you have surfaced with 50Bar thats a worst case of 25minutes
