Hey everyone,
This might be a pretty greenhorn thing to ask..... but here it goes.......:shakehead:
My wife and I are headed to St. Petersburg again this year about the second week in Oct. She has taken up with snorkeling for the first time down there at Ft. Desoto and loves it but just won't dive. I just got certified in the spring of '07 and really having a fun time at it. :D
Well anyways, what I'm looking for is some guidance for locating some great dive sites around St. Petersburg area that we can check out. I would love to take a day and do my first saltwater dive and for my wife to be able to go snorkeling while we're down there.:fish:
The problem is I just don't know where to go to to get a good, reputable place that is reasonable and will take us on a great, pleasurable dive. Admittedly, I'm still green to diving :dork2: and this may play a role in some places. But I'd still love to try this adventure.
The information on the web is just overwhelming  and I figured that this is the best place to get good, honest advice. Any helpful information and tips are certainly welcomed and appreciated!

Thanks guys! :lotsalove:

You're in the right place and welcome!

When you get about a month away from your visit first check to see if we're still here after hurricane season :D and second PM Capt. Ty, a regular on Scubaboard who runs an excellent dive boat out of Bay Pines in St.Pete. There are also a couple of shore dives a bit south of St.Pete in Bradenton (Spanish Rocks) and Venice beach for sharks teeth that you could do.

I'm sure others have more suggestions too.

As ED mentioned Capt. Ty is your ticket...best dive op on the left coast.

Cheers.

-J.-

As Ed said, let us know about a month before you get here. I'm sure some of us can take you shore diving at Spanish Rocks (our only real shore dive). Then as the others said, you can head out with Capt. Ty. :) Oh and don't feel shy, embarrassed, or green, we love helping and meeting visitors :)

Thanks for replying guys!
I seem to be heading down the right track now. :D
I know that it may be pretty far out yet to be inquiring but, I figured it's best to get started doing research early. I really want to be prepared to have a good experience down there.

My wife and I really look forward to our annual trek to the St. Pete area, great people and great beaches. This time we want to have something else to talk about when we're sitting at Caddy's having a drink:shelli: and watching the sun set over the horizon.

I'll definitely check out Capt. Ty and Spanish Rocks. This is good because, not only can we take a day to go on a diving excursion but we can also take time to enjoy a shore dive and snorkeling. :snorkel:

Keep the suggestions and tips coming guys! :lotsalove:

Uh... not much for her, but plenty for you...

This end of the coast requires fast boats to get you to good diving...

Snorkeling Spanish rocks will take a "Good snorkeler" in order to make those "memories...." Most of our diving happens 10-20 miles out in the Gulf....

Thanks for that heads up CoolTech. :)
My wife said it was o.k. for me to take a day and go diving but I still don't want to leave her completely out. :no Do the dive trips let non-diving personal go as well? and is there anything for them to do as well?

She had a blast last year down at Ft. Desoto snorkeling off north beach finding all the sand dollars and the shells there. (I believe she thinks she has to collect all the shells there).:shakehead:

The charters usually let non divers go. They charge for it but they let them on the boat. You can go down to Bradenton and hit the Sugar Barge for some snorkling. It is in about 15 feet of water at the most. It's not worth waisting an entire tank on but if you just want to spend some time with your wife and play around in the water it would be good for that. It is right across the street from SeaTrek Divers about 2 miles south of the Spanish Rocks. You could hit the rocks for a dive and then go down there to snorkle with the Mrs. Then you both have a good day and she stays happy. Cause you don't want to piss off the Mrs. That is never good!!!!!!

You could do a couple of morning dives then stop at Egmont Key for some snorkin' and beach time. It a pretty place and still looks like the real Florida.

Thanks for the other suggestions guys. I don't want her being left out of what will be a great experience for her.
Hey, git-r-dun diver, Is this where we can get to the sugar barge ourselves or is this a trip we have to book with someone? This sounds interesting also.

Cpt. Ty, the Edgemount Key sounds great too. Any more info.? By the way, thanks for the pm's.

Nice to have all of you guys helping. It's much better to talk with a dive community than tring to do the research on my own.
