Back in Cyprus. On holiday, but sorting out some family stuff which has kept me out the water. First dive today. If you go back through the thread, this dive will be almost identical to the one I did two years ago on my last visit.
Dive: 955
Site: Chapel Rock
Region: Famagusta District
Dive Time: 55 minutes
Maximum Depth: 21.3 metres
The authorities have reconfigured access to the site making it less diver friendly, but probably safer for non-diving tourists. Believe it or not, I decided the safest way to get in to the water was to jump a couple of metres in to the sea from the rocks. Thankfully, the exit wasn't as exciting!
Anyway, I was rewarded with stunning 30 metre visibility. As usual for Cyprus, not much in the way of fish life, but the usual suspects were present, plus a few species which I suspect have encroached from the Red Sea including lionfish. I had planned to harvest some to eat, but there is still no legal way to do this on SCUBA so left them alone. I also saw a few fist-size crabs which is a first for me in Cyprus despite hundreds of dives.
Temperature varied from 28 degrees C at the surface to 22 degrees C at 20 metres. I was wearing a two piece 5mm wetsuit. Many would consider this overkill and I do wonder if there's something wrong with my temperature regulation at times, but it proved to be perfect. I wasn't too warm at any point and only a little cool at depth.
As per my normal routine, I didn't take a camera on the first dive of the trip, but my wife grabbed an action shot of the entry.
Nice dive to start the trip!
