I've seen them off the dry salvages and little salvages in cold months (when most divers have given up for the season), as well as in Cohasset's outer harbor in september, and the inner Boston Harbor islands in April.

I saw about 20 last weekend off Eastern Egg Rock in Muscongus Bay in Maine.. but that's about 3-4 miles from the coast and almost certainly not worth diving. Nice to sit in a kayak and have them pop up and peer at you, though.

We did a charter with Captain Rob's last weekend (www.captainrobs.com) to the Isle of Shoals and saw many. Our first dive was Star Island - a nice wall with max depth of about 95 ft. Lovely. The second dive was adjacent to Seal Cove, and it was basically seal soup at 15-20 ft max depth. I can send you photos if you want - pm me. We requested an advanced dive followed by a seal dive, by the way. Captain Rob was really a nice guy, and the boat was fine. $60 cash for 2 dives. He goes out of the marina in Rye , NH. Be warned - he is almost done for the year (will put the boat in until the end of this month), so get in quick if you want to go.

- should also say that Cape Ann Divers runs trips to the Isle of Shoals as well, but they are an all-day thing rather than 1/2 day. But I'll bet they keep going past the end of October.

Where in MA can I see seals? Do I need to go to Maine? I dive Cape Ann 95% of the time and I've never seen one.

I saw 2 this spring just up the Rowley River in back of Plum Island, just N of Cape Ann. Wasn't diving at the time, on the way back in the boat - they just popped up and looked around and we watched them meandering around for a while! It was pretty cool!

Man have I been talking about Halfway Rock a lot this summer.....but you can see seals there sometimes. If there are boats all over the place you will not see them. Each time I have seen them my boat was the only one around (and not running of course while moored). I had one dive with a seal swimming around us. As soon as we heard a boat coming it took off. I had my fin tugged during a night dive there as well.

The Isle of Shoals is the place to go if you want the best chance of seeing lots of seals.

You aren't likely to see seals on any shore dive around here that I'm aware of.

Chebby:
Is the Isle of Shoals far from the coast? Would prefer a shore dive as I am not too crazy about boat dives.

It was maybe a 20 min boat ride from Rye - not bad at all. If you are in Framingham, we actually live pretty close to you - Rye took about another 30-40 min in travel time vs Cape Ann.
