Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum, and new back to diving after a looooooooooong absence. My kids are now 7 and 10 (and haven't managed to talk my husband into diving - yet) and I work part time, so I try to do shore dives during the week and rarely do a dive on a weekend because I don't want to interfere with family time too much. How do others balance diving and family? Interested to hear your thoughts.

All the best

At 7 & 10, either take them snorkeling a lot and get them keyed-up to learn to dive.

I understand where you are coming from BUT you need to set a good example for your kids, too. Having a hobby that doesn't revolve around being a Mom is important. Your kids learn that Mom is more than just Mom, she is a person with interests, hobbies, and skills. Go ahead and book some dive trips, get your husband interested, and let the kids snorkel or leave them with grandma and go on a trip diving! ;)

We've taken our younger kids with us and enrolled them in snorkeling and exploration classes and we've also left them with my Mom. We go on weekends and take everyone with us, and we'll take the scuba certified kids diving and then play with the younger ones at the beach.

It can be made to work, it can be a real pain, but it can happen.

If you are close to the water and can spare the time plan diving for one day a week in the morning or afternoon. Stick with it and let them all know that that is YOUR time, not theirs. Your kids should be in shcool anyway so that shouldn't affect your time.

Leave the kids home with the hubbie and you go off for your fun!!! Hey, mom needs rest too.

Just turn him into soccer dad!

It is great that you can take time during the week to do your dives but I wouldn't leave the kids out. I introduced both my sons to the ocean 4 days after their bellybutton healed up, they are also 3 years apart in age. They both could swim and float before they managed to walk. Mask, fins and snorkel were used almost every weekend, as they grew older there were buggy boards, skin boards and surf boards; but mask and snorkels were always used, free diving for stuff, swimming races and your typical horseplay in the water. By the time they were old enough to scuba dive they had no problem with any of the basic skills, they were familiar with dive gear because they grew up around it. Later on they went on to other activities but every so often they still have time for a dive with mom.

I find diving very personal, and I think that taking time during the week to dive will give you mental peace that will allow you to be a better mom (for sure more patient when the kids push the limits) I know my kids are alive thanks to my diving. But also share your water world with them; in the water with them, there are no video games, no text messages or any other distractions; there is physical activities, exposure to a magnificent world, opportunities to teach them all kind of marine stuff about waves, fish wind, respect to environment, avoidance to weirdos, wow the list goes forever. And all that learning while having fun. The cherry on top way later after they left the house, it will be such a treat when they share a dive with you.

Won't be easy sometimes to fit a dive because you'll have many things to do, but if it doesn't affect the financial picture of the house, make it your weekly obligation, the investment will be worth it.

What is the matter with status quo diving during the week? I would imagine there are other women out there you could team up with during that logical time period. Perhaps there are charter boats willing to let your sons on board for a nice outdoor outing with mom at modest cost...

I have no kids but I do have a young dog! I find going for the morning dive really makes time for the rest of life. My favourite dive site is about 7 minutes from home, so it's nothing for us to get up a little early, as if we were going for a run, and go for a dive instead. Opens the day right up!
