Hi,
I hate those stupid octo holders that don't really work, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to attach a backup. Obviously something that will break away when pulled on, but went come loose for no apparent reason. I know the DIR crowd will say put it around your neck with surgical tubing, but how do they do that? Any pics out that show how? Other ideas would be welcome as well.

I've seen the tubing attached to the octo with a zip tie. I personally wore my octo once that way and felt like I was being strangled (no the tubing wasn't too short and I really wasn't being) so that is definitely not my attachment choice.

I have a pretty plain octo holder that actually works quite well. It's just a clip and a loop of elastic (like a strong hair rubber band). The old one I had gave me problems with coming off, but this one I don't have any troubles with. Unfortunately, I can't remember what brand it is.

I use one eighth inch surgical tubing and tie a loop around the mouthpiece right at the ziptie using a square knot. The two free ends are used to form the loop that goes around my neck. I use a double overhand know to close that loop at the proper size and cut off the excess.

I use a piece of 3/8 inch bungee cord around the mouth piece, it is tight enough to hold it but not too tight to pull it out or pull the mouth piece off when it is pulled out. I tie the cord to a small carbiner that I attach to a D on the right shoulder strap of my BC. You can play with the size of the loop to get it right. Don’t use a slip knot of any type. It is inexpensive and holds very well. I leave the carbiner attached to my BC all the time.

3/8" bungee cord around the neck with zip ties around the mouth piece. Very convenient. Won't go back to the old way of doing things.

This still allows the reg to be pulled out easily enough?

From reading your question I am assuming that you are going to be donating the octo to someone that is out of air. If that is the case you don't want to bungee it around your neck, as that is the method for those that use it has a backup reg when donating the primary reg to an OOA diver.

You can just use some bungee or tubing (even bike tire inner tube) to make a holder and have it where ever you want your octo to be kept.

You're talking about two mutually exclusive functions. If you rig your "spare" second stage on a necklace, it is no longer an octopus, it is a safe second. It is no longer an octopus because you do not donate it in that configuration and you don't want people grabbing it. You donate your primary regulator, which should be on a long hose for this use.

I like 1/8" bungee as a necklace, but surgical tubing works well also.
