So what's on the islands off Los Angeles?

I know there is Catalina Island.

Do people live on these island?
if so, what is their employment?
(on Catalina I could see it being in the tourist industry).

Looking at Google Maps, I saw that one or two of the other
islands around Catalina had an airstrip on them.
Can someone tell me more about what's on these islands?

Just always been curious about them is all.

BTW... One of the islands I noticed on the map was San Nicholas island which might belong to the Navy?/??? The other San Clemente?????

San Clemente - US Navy
San Nic. - US Navy
Santa Catalina - the only non-military populated island. Most of the island belongs to the Conservancy.
Santa Barbara & Anacapa Islands - Channel Islands National Park (one ranger most of the time).
Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, & San Miguel - Channel Islands National Park (rangers)

ME... I'm on Catalina. Only island in the group with an incorporated city and ownership of property by individual residents (but only in Avalon). Rest of the island is owned by the Conservancy (88%) or the Santa Catalina Island Co. (11%).

San Clemente is US Navy as Jim pointed out. Used for various training exercises including SEALS, ship-to-shore bombardment, etc.

San Nicolas also Navy. Was part of Pt. Magu missile range at one time.

So how many people live on Catalina?
what do most of them do for a living?
Is the main industry tourism?

How is life there different from "being on the mainland"?

Being so close to LA, I guess you don't really have any supply problems.
Also by your posts I can assume that you also are not "suffereing"
from lack of Internet either. (lord forbid...)

I lived in LA for part of a year, but I never made it out to the islands.
It was something that I always wanted to do.

There is also a island with a tribe of female warriors on it.

I found back when I was a young explorer, but alas I cannot remember where it is.

I plan to live there, when I do remember though. :)

A lot of questions to respond to and I'm on line with my sweetie.

Census had about 4,000 but City estimated 5,000+

Most are involved in tourism or are retired or are too young to work

Yes

Quite different from the mainland (I've been here 36 years but have lived there as well). Take a long time to give specifics.

During winter storms we may not get our groceries if the barge can't make it.

Internet didn't get here until about 1995... I'd been on it for years by then (during my grad school days spent half on Catalina and half at UCSB)

Make sure you share it's location when you do find it.

Actually, legend has it that the West End of Catalina was populated by a tribe of Amazon women. I've been trying to get captured by them for the last 36 years.
