I've read about a lot of great kits on this thread. I'm sorry if I missed if someone has already talked about this, but what is the minimum you would take with you onto a boat for your save-a-dive kit? There's so little room on a lot of boats to begin with and I don't want to be rolling up with a pelican case full of gear, but I would like to know what some of you would never step foot on a boat without.

For a charter boat I'd probably just take the spare mask and o rings. I may though (if I'm not taking my pony bottle) take my pony reg. I actually used this on a shore dive or two when I broke a reg hose and it was in for replacement. I carry the pony reg in my spare kit to my shore dives now. I don't have such things as depth gauge and compass, but my dives are usually under 30'--if deeper I can take the DC for depth.

Being new to diving you are also new to your equipment - that is why you are asking. Check all of your gear before getting to the dive site or boat. The screws are tight on your BCD. All hoses are tight. Belts and shoulder straps adjusted to your size. No bent buckles. On some BCD's there is a small plastic valve - like a cap that is on your shoulder for venting your BCD. This is totally forgotten many times. Once it is lost you are not going to be able to use the BCD for floatation until you find another cap. Not all BCD's have these. I have been lugging a SPG and high pressure hose for over 6 years. This last trip I looked @ it as I was packing. I pulled it out and then put it back in. On the second day of the trip I noticed my gas consumption was greatly improved and my new found buddy was getting irritated @ me. I checked it after the last dive of the day and the SPG was over 300 lbs off. I just had my gear serviced before this trip and requested the Tec to check the SPG. I was happy I had an extra SPG in my bag - I have blown HP hoses before so that is always in my bag on board. More often than not the crew on board will happily fix your gear and or exchange parts out. I just like to do it myself - cuz it is my gear. Always a spare mouth piece. Mine feel apart on a back roll and I had to use my alt air for the whole dive. Lots of other stuff that you will figure out. Always the "100 mile an hour tape" as Alaskans call "duct tape".

This one tool replaced several in my tool kit. It is expensive but I will always be grateful to own one. It is the foundation of my tool kit for repairs to my gear whether on the boat or shore.

I bought the Knipex small pliers. They are awesome, small and do exactly what they need to while being thin enough to even remove a transmitter. They just dropped in my save a dive in a little open space. Unlike the adjustable wrench. Great suggestion!

Always add duct tape - preferably in a bright color. Last trip I used it to hold my light to my camera rig AND as a band-aid for a blister on my toe (more waterproof than band-aids). Lots of uses. I roll some onto a pencil and keep it handy.

You can roll some duct tape around a little bit of 550 cord, leave a loop at one end and then you can attach it as a zipper pull on jackets etc so you always have a little bit with you on your travels,

No LLOTYW?

I carry with me on the boat, in my gear bag:
o-rings, assorted
cable ties,
Comfort Bite regulator mouth piece,
Plastic Quik-release buckle,
Small adjustable wrench
Waxed thread
Band Aids
Daily Meds
and a couple other things

So far the only thing that that wasn't already available on the dive boat when needed was the Comfort Bite mouth piece. A lady from Belgium was getting a sore mouth from her regulator so the Comfort Bite was worth carrying around. I've seen at least two weight-belt buckles break and so far there was always another weight belt to use, but.... I bring the little wrench and screwdriver just in case the second stage starts hissing.
