Guys
My girlfriend is taking her OW course starting this weekend, doing her ocean dives the weekend of the 14/15. I just tried getting a hotel in Monterer for the saturday night, and everything, i mean everything on travelocity, expedia, all of the sites is booked solid, no matter the price. I know the hotels get busy down there, but i have never seen this before...so i'm guessing something is happening in Monterey..anyone know what?

Usually the races fill up the hotels. This time: 31st Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races

The historics attract a very large crowd.

Try beautiful Salinas. It is close enough to be worth it.

Next try my hometown of Gilroy. It's about 40 minutes to Breakwater from there.

You could also try looking for a bed and breakfast place.

thanks for the replies guys, i reckon i'll be driving back to the bay on saturday night, then heading back down for sunday

Did you try the Travel Lodge?
They have a discount for divers

Shastaman is right about Gilroy, except 40 minutes might
be a little high. There's a Motel 6 on the south end of
Gilroy, nice and new, that might be worth a shot. It's 47
minutes (without the trailer and 55 MPH ALL the way)
from my place in Morgan Hill to the Breakwater. It's
10 minutes to the south end of Gilroy. Do the math.

If you live in Santa Clara, it's probably not worth it.
If you live Concord, it probably is. I spent ONE dive
weekend (out of about 350) in Monterey, but I live in
Morgan Hill.

The Monterey County Fair starts on August 17th. That could be your culprit.

I would second the suggestion about the Travelodge on North Fremont. They are very diver friendly and offer discounts for divers if you mention that you are in town to dive. They usually ask what dive shop referred you. You can name your local dive shop or any dive shop here in Monterey.

I would also suggest contacting the hotels directly. Just because there are no rooms available through Travelocity, etc. it doesn't mean there are no rooms available.

Don't forget, the Concourse D'elegance is that weekend also. Lots of very nice cars and lots of people.

Well, there you go. I just took a look at Orbitz for that weekend. OMFG, you weren't kidding. God, I can't think of a worse weekend to go and stay in Monterey.

FWIW, go here http://www.monterey.com/mc6/mc6.html#aug to see what's going on from month to month.

Gilroy is a good idea. There are still some rooms available for 40-60. You might also want to try the Motel 6 Salinas - South - it's about a half hour away from Breakwater. Hollister might be an option as well. Heck, if I were you, I might try Santa Cruz.

Good luck.
