I have been watching a lot of american tv programmes via satelite. on some of the cartoons they mention getting cooties. whats a cootie? just curious

Imaginary germs that the opposite sex has. An 8 year old boy can't touch a girl cause she has cooties, yanno  Ewwww, girls!

Snowbear:
Not imaginary....

coo·tie koo tee

n. Slang: A body louse.
Somehow I doubt the Saturday morning cartoons are talking about body lice.

I always thought that cooties were the things you sneezed out by accident at the worst moment on a really hot first date with a woman who is now wondering how she got stuck with this geek who can't find a tissue.....

....oops.....said too much :)

I thought everyone knew what cooties are.

They are a medical condition carried by all little girls that are highly contagious, but only to little boys. A mere touch by a cootie infected girl is usually enough to infect the victim (as cooties are usually passed intentionally by mean spirited girls).

Symptoms include irrational behavior (ie running around screaming or falling down), wild shaking of the infected area, and loud chorusus of young male voices shouting "eeeewwwwwwww". Fortunately, cooties are rarely fatal and the symptoms usually dissipate after a few minutes (sooner if a teacher is present).

The contagious vermin are prevalent until the boys reach the age of about 13 or 14 when it seems that, for some unknown medical reason, the girls' ability to be hosts to said vermin vanishes with extraordinary speed!!!
However, there does seem to be some correlation between the disappearance of cooties and the development of breasts in the young females of the species.
You may want to consult the Journal of the American Medical Association for further study into this phenomenon.

LOL! I remember hearing the same question when I was in college from a European classmate. My father thought it might have military origins, either WWI or WWII, but now it does seem to be used mainly by children. Example: "He touched you! You've got cooties!"

Does this it travel by other names elsewhere, perhaps?
