First, I'll give the scenario, then what I did....

Hubby and I went on a Treasure Hunt dive yesterday. We knew the max depth for this particular quarry was 28 feet. I am one that is constantly checking my computer... probably more than I should. Apx. 5-7 minutes after our decent, I looked at my computer (which had been fine!) and it was dead... I could push the on button and it would scroll thru the "logs" then it would shut right back off. I tried this 3 times... and it wouldn't stay on. My husband, who was also my dive buddy, was signalling that he didn't know what was wrong with it either. He dives with 2 computers... his Oceanic computer/guages, and his Aqualand (?) watch... which is a complete computer in itself. My air guage was NOT dependant upon my computer, so... I knew how much air I had.... I knew (within 3 or 4 minutes) about how long I had been down at that point. I signalled my husband that we would find the "loot", then we would turn back navigate back toward the beach.... thuse making it a shorter dive, but playing it safe.

Now, I know, I know... you should never dive your buddy's computer... but I used it only to monitor my depth... which was never below 23 feet (remember max in this particular quarry is 28 feet). I felt that under the circumstances, I was fine to continue the dive. I just monitored my air, and every once in a while, I checked the depth on my husband's computer. We got in a 34 minute dive.... found our "loot" and we wound up winning a gear cleaning kit (worth $40-$50) and a baseball cap and license plate frame.

All in all, it was a good dive. The vis was ok.... some places we had 15 feet, other places, we would swim directly into a total silt-out. We handled our very first equiptment failure... in 10 years of diving! I think it still went quite well.

Has anyone else ever had something similar happen? What did you do?

Doesn't hurt to dedicate to memory the NDL's for depths you frequently dive at.

If it had happened to me, I would have continued the dive. 34 minutes at 28 feet is no where near approaching a NDL.

Plan the dive with tables, carry a redundant depth / time source, and you will very rarely have to call a dive due to computer failure.

I personally would have kept diving. There is a big difference between a quarry where you can't possibly go past your NDL and a deep wreck dive. To be honest I almost never wear my computer in the quarry, why waste the battery. Watching your depth and time is important but we should be realistic about it as well. At 25ft the NDL is so far off the chart that it's just not a valid concern, you could not go into deco on single 80s if you tried. If your concerned about the next dive, use the time off your buddies computer, the known max depth of the quarry and drag out the tables. At those depths the NDL times are so long, it's not a safety issue.

That was my thinking too.... I would have PLENTY of time available at that depth... I'd run out of air before I'd run out of time, so to speak. I did use my husband's time and depth... as he and I were side by side for everything... decent, ascent, and touring.

I should also mention that I was happy with the short 34 minutes. I was getting quite cold, and there really wasn't anything to look at. I'm a cold water wimp!

10 years of diving......oh I just checked, never mind..........

Lets start using our heads here erpara.

What??? Look.... I've never had an equiptment failure before... just wondering what others would have done. No need for rudeness!

You did good and I'd do what you did.

Never share a computer rule makes a lot of sense most of the time, but there are times when we are allowed to bend this rule. Diving shallower than 30 ft is one of such times, but, you have to be aware of whether it's a repetitive dive for either of divers. If pushed to the limits, this might cause problems.

Besides,...

...this shows that you did use your head and had the necessary knowledge what to do to go through with that dive. Congrats, you did well!

Let's say it was 100'. I would've continued looking at my watch, pulled out the analog gepth gauge, and kept diving.

Thank you Mislav....

I think we did well. It was a 2nd dive for my husband, but the first dive of the day for me. So... it worked out well. We don't EVER push the limits... just our preferance not to.

Now, it's time to figure out what went wrong with my computer and get it fixed before vacation.
