We are heading to Bonaire on the redeye out of Newark on Saturday, staying at Buddy's for the week. I have been reading lots about theft on Bonaire, leaving truck unlocked etc. Is anything safe in the truck? I am thinking about glasses, save-a-dive kit? I know that I can put the drivers license and car keys in a little dry pouch in my BC pocket but there are those other incidentals that I am not quite sure what to do with? I have done largely boat diving in the past so this was never an issue. Any advice?

I would really leave nothing in the truck. Leave the windows open, and the truck empty, as recommended, and you will be fine.

I used to leave my eyeglasses in the truck, but now follow the wise advice someone posted, to put them in a cheap eyeglass case, and stow them in a pocket.

water bottles, an old towel, that sort of thing is OK to leave, but not anything that you will miss, if it grows wings while you are away, UW for an hour. We usually carry a couple of $ and a charge card, plus the room and truck keys in a "waterproof" case, on our person while diving. The island is small, and unless you are driving north to the park, everything is close and it is really easy to return to your residence after, and between dives, so there is no reason to have to leave any valuables in a vehicle, and take un necessary risk.

Leave an old t-shirt, a towel, and crappy flip flops...that's it (you can leave tanks in the back). Don't leave a save-a-dive kit or glasses, unless they're a pair of $5 sunglasses that look like it. Put a few extra o-rings in your dry pouch just in case you get a bad one on a tank....or simply carry an extra tank like we do!

The island is small and if there are any problems you can go back to your condo to fix them. It's a bit more of a hassle than carrying a save-a-dive kit, but at least you know it'll be there when/if you need it. There are also so many dive shops everywhere that you wouldn't even necessarily need to go back to the condo and could likely buy what you need near your dive site.

One hint is to buy a couple of large bottles of water at the store. Pour a little out of one and put it in the freezer. In the morning, take the bottle of ice and the regular one and put them both in the back of your truck when you head out. After your first dive, some of the will be melted and you'll have nice cold water to drink. The other one will have nice warm water to rinse your face with. Simply refill the bottles at the end of the day and repeat. At the end of your stay on Bonaire, empty both bottle, smash them flat and bring them home (along with your used batteries) and recycle them. That'll keep them out of Bonaire's landfill since they don't have recycling capabilities at this time.

I leave tanks I'm not using on that dive in the truck, but nothing else. If I can't take it in the water with me, I don't put it in the truck.

no need to carry your drivers license around .You can keepa few dollars in your wetsuit/bathing suit pocket.Everyone will accept wet money.

I do the same. Water- including a 2 L that is left on the hood for rinse offs, towels, old Tshirt and ragged tennis shoes are in the truck. Truck keys, a CC, a $20 bill and the room keys in a "waterproof" case in my BC. My glasses go in a hard side glasses case and into the BC pocket as well, salt water does not hurt them and a quick rinse of water is all that is needed. So far in 15 trips I have had zero problems.

Thanks for the suggestions-- not sure if everyone's BC's has a pocket, but I can hopefully get 2 sets of glasses in the pockets.

Cheap sunglasses, smelly t-shirt, previously opened bottles of water......leave windows down so its obvious you aren't trying to conceal anything. No reason to carry license, credit cards, wallet. I tuck a $20 bill in a zip lock into a BC pocket.

No pockets in my BP/W but my dive rite thigh pocket works great, holds tons of stuff securely and I don't even notice it in the water. Just wrap the strap around leg, and hook up the clip to a loop that you put on belt = easy as can be.

Leave nothing. Roll down the windows.
