Since it seems you are a bit anxious about this I would suggest you sort out where you would likely do your scuba class and then see if they offer a discover scuba program. If not, do it somewhere else.
It is an opportunity to go to the dive shop, get a little bit of very basic "training," get into dive gear and try it out in a pool in a very relaxed setting. If there is some particular skill or issue you are worried about, you can ask an instructor about it.
Many places will credit the cost of the discover session to the price of scuba classes if you take them with that shop.
Please don't be put off by some of what you may read hear on Scubaboard, there are all kinds of personalities around here, but that includes plenty of people who will be happy to answer questions.
