While preparing for another summer of diving, I was looking through my PADI OW manual and noticed that in a section on required stops, that if you exceed your maximum by 8 minutes on a no decomp dive, you need a stop of 15 minutes at 15 feet. My question is if your air supply will not allow a 15 minute stop, but you have a spare tank on the boat, should you surface, re-tank, and return to 15 feet? And if so, for how long?

Thanks.

Stan

Presumably you would be with your buddy who would be in the same position, so you would use his alternate reg. If you were with your buddy and he didn't notice you were into deco either, then you both had better start watching your gauges closer.
Essentially getting out of the water ends your decompression and getting back in will do nothing but I'm not a doctor.

you have no choice but to go up if you run out of air.

and stay out of the water . give it 24 hours. before your next dive.

i would like to post but...... oh what the heck... if you were diving shallow... GO for it....... i'd suggest a minimum of 20 mins S.I. on Oxygen then go dive safely again after 3 hours of S.I..

take my opinion like a grain of salt

:D

How far are you from a chamber?

Seriously, you are off your tables so there's no way to know what the ideal plan would be. The conventional advice would be stay on the surface, breathe 100% O2 if available and monitor yourself for signs of DCS.

I hate to say it, but the combination of going WAY into deco and not having the gas to deal with it suggests that you should surface, monitor yourself for DCS symptoms, and if you don't get them, get some additional education before diving again . . . Really, it sounds nasty, but the combination could be extremely dangerous.
