If a student has completed their dive-master program and his instructors’ teaching credentials are placed into an inactive status, can the student still get his dive master application processed? No other instructor will process his application because they didn't teach him or were not present for any of his education. He has over one year as a DM candidate and almost three years of doing basically the DMC duties without the title. He has his evaluation form filled out and completed but no one seems to care. The only advice he gets is to do it over again. Is there anyway he can get credit for all his done, basically get his application processed? Is there any way a suspended instructor can sign off retroactively? Otherwise it's redo and repay - and that sucks.

Assuming that your DM work, and this instructor, are associated with a shop.........then I'd start there.

Next, I would contact whatever agency you are affiliated with and ask them what to do.

Third.......see if you can find another active instructor that can simply confirm your experience and then evaluate your skills ....

Good luck!

Which agency?

If the student completed the DM work when the instructor was not inactive, I'd guess the agency would accept the paperwork.

I would start with contacting the agency, or the former instructor.

his instructors’ teaching credentials are placed into an inactive status,

Does this mean that the instructor just didn't pay his yearly dues by choice or there is disciplinary action against the instructor?

If just a matter of instructor not paying his dues, he just have to pay it and submit the paperwork for his DM student. If it is due to disciplinary action against the instructor, then the DM should contact the agency directly and see what they suggest. The DM is probably screwed in this scenario and will have to find another active status to do a DM course with him .

Need clarification on instructor status. The original post has two very different statuses (underlined and in bold above).

Inactive Status Instructor - An instructor who did not renew their instructor card by the annual renewal date by paying the fees and having the appropriate insurance. To become an active status instructor from this point only requires paying the fees and obtaining insurance if it has not been too long since they went inactive.

Suspended Instructor - This is an action taken by the certifying agency to remove instructors who are not meeting the standards of the certifing agency. This is what many would call disciplinary action and it is not done lightly. To get past this the suspended instructor would need to win an appeal with the certification agency to be reinstated.

If the instructor in question just needs to reactivate, the DM Candidate should meet with them and their dive shop and express their position that they have paid for certification and have met the requirements of same and now ask their instructor to honor the contract by filing the paperwork. Keeping that paying for and taking a course is not a guarantee of certification at the end of it if, in the opinion of the insturctor the standards have not been met.

In short, we all look forward to hearing how this all plays out and which status was the correct one. No easy answer here.

The last skill was completed when he was active but reviewed and signed off on by an instructor who was and is active.

His teaching status is inactive - this is due to an investigation PADI made due to an accident. They niether confirm nor deny he was at fault, and just stopped investigating. Leaving him in an inactive status.

That doesn't look good for you at all, not at all.

Nope not at all. Either I find an instructor who'll process my application or do it all over again! And that sucks.
