United is the worst when it comes to carry-on size.

You're gonna put a plate+wing+drybag package under the seat in front of you? Or is this gaming the system so you still take up two spaces in the overhead?

I used to carry the fins in the Condor Centurion duffle bag using the old system. But since that can no longer be used, I put the fins in the carry on sized piece of luggage that can measure up to 22 x 14 x 9. My deep 6 eddy fins do not fit in my particular carry on sized luggage, so I initially tried the detachable TUSA tech fins. However, I did not like the feel of those fins, so I ended up trimming the eddy fin tips so that they can fit in the carry on sized piece of luggage. I will be covering that in part 3. I subjectively noticed a small performance decline, but it was not significant enough for me to risk not having my favorite fins arrive in checked luggage.

i used to strap my fins to the outside of my carry-on but united said it didn't qualify as a carry-on. so i threatened to wear my fins on the plane. they let me just carry them.

I pack my Hydros pro BCD, regulators, computers, and wetsuit in a pelican carry on. Use a stahlsac for misc items and put the fins in a checked bag. I have carried them on before but it isn’t worth the hassle getting them in the bag as I have to remove the springs. I always lock my pelican in case they force it to be checked or have plane side return on the smaller jets. In the last couple weeks I have flown in Coredon, TUI, and United without any issues.

And I will admit I hog the overhead if at all possible.

Time to switch to a different airline?
I'm thinking on my next flight to bring a measuring tape to measure those bins. I swear they are smaller than they indicate.

my OW instructor told the story of taking his bcd out of his carry on and wearing it for the entire flight. a little uncomfortable but it worked. i would do it just for the weird looks from fellow passengers.

On the direct Houston to Bonaire flight on 14 DEC 24, I saw several people with their fins loose, including two individuals from our group. I think that they are getting used to it on that particular run. We also had a number of individuals in our group wear their jacket BCDs on previous trips. I don't know if they actually wore them on the plane as there is usually plenty of space. Some people have told me that they think that wearing a BCD thru security will cause problems with TSA, but I have never seen that happen.
