According to the requirements for Cave 1, all participants need a safety spool that is made of Delrin, and must contain 50m/150ft of braided #24 gauge line.

The biggest I could fine on DGE holds only 30m of line.

Where can I get a spool that holds 50m of line, and what are my options?

Also, I have heard that high-viz and glow in the dark lines are not recommended for Cave. Just curious as to why this is so?

Requirements also say you need a watch with stopwatch function. Will something like a Petrel do? Or an analog watch with a second hand?

Thanks.

Very common questions, and the answer is.....your instructor will have the best answers. But for those that like to get a jump on things at the risk of contrary advice from your instructor...
You can find lots of spools/reels online from Cave adventures, diverightinscuba, piranha dive and others.

The line color doesn't really matter......some believe it does. A back up timing device is definitely required (I used a D3 until it just went south after 9 yrs of use).

Select either 150' or 200'. Imo the 200ft one is excessive, but its fine. Skip any of the spool options with a little gimmicky handle. 0/10 would not dive.

Hi-vis is real whatever, doesn't make a difference. If you're using a safety spool, you're going to have a death grip on that thing, so the line color doesn't matter. Its more for feeling than for seeing if you're pullin' out the safety spool.

Petrel should do, but I always carry a digital watch (Casio, accept no substitutes) as a backup timer. Its super handy.

Thanks! I'll probably get the H since it's around the same price as the rest.

Which Casio are you using btw?

. . .

Is the hi-viz line of a smaller diameter than #24? DGE offers the LM size Large spool with options of 100 feet of regular #24 line OR 150 feet of hi-viz line. In other words, there is no option for 150 feet of #24. I chose the 150 feet of hi-viz but wondered about whether there is a line diameter difference.
