I would like some opinions regarding my next p/s after my canon case flooded my sd800 in Cozumel last week. It was the first time that happened in 5years of using this system. I have dual ys27dh strobes and trays....Want to upgrade to a newer p&s and newer technology...any thoughts??

Rick:

Scan across the titles of the last 100 threads in this forum and you'll catch on real quick what the consensus in the forum is. The only real disagreement is what housing to put it in but for most people economics makes that choice for them.

:D

Most people find that the Canon S95 does everything needed, and well. For slightly closer focus the Canon G12 is sometimes preferred. These cameras have the same sensor and similar performance, but the S95 has few knobs for individual functions such as ISO, exposure compensation etc, while the G12 has lots of dedicated knobs for adjustments and is bigger. I have used both and personally prefer the smaller S95 but that's just a personal choice. Both will get the job done quite well. You should know that the Olympus xz1 and Panasonic LX5 are considered at least as good and probably better by many users, but the housings cost much more than the Canon housings.

As for housings, the standard Canon housings are the least expensive by far. They lack the ability to control the rear dial, which only the much more expensive metal housings provide. You can work around this using the S Shortcut button so in practice it is a minor nuisance at most. But there is no question that the fit and function of the FIX and RecSea metal housings are tops and cost accordingly.

If you get the opportunity, test them yourself. There is no substitute for handling the real thing. But if that's not convenient, I personally think going from your old setup to either of the Canons would be very easy, and you will be very impressed by the picture quality improvement both cameras allow.

What slowhands said!

I'm about the use the S90 (the predecessor of S95) with the canon housing. I'll let you know how it goes..

I was just reading the user guide for the housing- one of the warnings: "Do not use the waterproof case in place of a personal flotation device (life jacket)" I would hope anyone snorkeling or diving would have enough common sense...

Don't be fooled into believing that most humans have common sense cuz they don't :D.

No doubt the warning, like most others in the USA, are to help offset lawsuits. There are some that would drown using the housing as a personal flotation device and their surviving relatives would sue and get a tax free settlement :depressed:.

Gilligan, we have both used the G10 (which I still like), but I see you have the G12... how do you like that compared to the G10?

I got an S90, and there are several aspects about the camera that I don't like that much (thankfully it is not my only camera)...

Dam, you mean I need to buy a BCD, as well as a new UW camera? Who'd a thunk it? :rofl3:

You are right tho. One time when I was purchasing a property, and having to sign form, after form, after form that the bank's attorney was passing across the table, my lawyer commented that every single one of those forms existed because, somewhere, at some time, someone lost a lawsuit, so a new form was created, to prevent its recurrence!
