Relaxation - it is the only place I feel a complete sense of peace.

Another vote for the "Bucket List" thing. My husband and I recently became empty nesters, and we have the time and $, as well as our health, to do it. It appeals to our sense of adventure, is a physical as well as mental challenge (gives us incentive to keep in good shape), and an activity that if we are going to pursue, we don't want to wait until it's too late healthwise. When I get old, I don't want to have regrets about all the things I wish I had done. You gotta seize the day.:D

I found I had too much money and needed an expensive addiction to spend it on that was legal

There is a thread on SB titled "Reasons people dive" which may also help with your research.

http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/basic-scuba-discussions/252835-reason-people-dive-sharing.html

Below is a copy of what I posted in that thread which explains what motives me to dive.
  • I love the flying/floating weightlessness sensation, must be similar to what a bird feels in the sky.
  • I love the "zen" feeling of neutral buoyancy.
  • I love the many colors of the coral and the wild marine life.
  • I love how diving humbles me and pushes me beyond my own preset diving limitations. Always thought I was strictly a warm water vacation diver but since cenote dives, I enjoy cold-water quarry and lake diving, also want to do more wreck penetrations, do caves and go tech in a few years.
  • I love the excitement of not knowing what I'll encounter on each dive.
  • I love sharing the dive and the stories with fellow divers.
  • I love learning from fellow divers.

When I was a kid my dreams always involved being able to fly. Diving feels the way flying felt in my dreams!

I do it because I like to be broke... :)

I like fooling with gear; cleaning valves and tanks and putting it together. I like messing with the equipment.

When underwater I feel so at peace and feel so refreshed. I wish I could dive at least every week but it's not very easy to do in Ohio.

You do know what the psychologists say those dreams are about?

;)

For me, diving is a means to an end. I'm one of the fortunate few that as I've gotten older I've never lost that childlike curiosity about everything. The Earth is 2/3rds water so I needed to get a glimpse at what I was missing beneath the surface. It's one thing to watch a show about the underwater world on T.V., it's another to see the unedited version.
