What makes a master diver?

I know how much work and training I had to go through to become eligable to have the PADI MSD. It wasn't "just a credit card."

I hope you got the badges as well.

You can put them down the sleeve of your dive jacket.

i really think that the word "master diver" gives the diver a faulse sence of experteess . and of course the word "advanced" ,

i dive with an agency called CMAS , and their grade levels dont state advanced or master or anything of the sort .

in CMAS a diver has to obtain 35 dives and a test before being a 2 star diver .

they have to obtain another futher 50 dives a , rescue , diver emergancy responder a boat lience and a leading diver course before they can apply to do a weekend long exam Practical and written .

after some time and beeing involved with their club and the orgainisation they can go for their indvidual instructor exams . :14:

its a really hard road to go down but well worth it . the whole process can take from new to instructor can take a min 5 years . and has a high failure rate.

But just being able to meet learning objectives does not then mean they are 'master' of those skills, especially if they have only done the minimum number of dives (20). Again, this is not a knock of Naui. For sure, the course requirements for Naui Master Diver is more intensive than the others. Just saying that a Master Diver card from any of the agency's does not guarantee one is a master diver.

What it guaratees is that the holder has a knowledge base equal to that of a NAUI Instructor and that the holder's water skills are on a par with those expected of a NAUI Instructor. If you can accomplish that in twenty dives ... god bless.

You have already demonstrated your level of knowledge on Scubaboard. There is no need to re-test it.

PADI are so big they need to turn over vast amounts of cash to stay afloat .

I personally think that the padi system is a fantastic learning system . if the lectures were done at a club level and all courses done free of charge great its the fact that they cost so much, but somebody has taken the time effort and detailed each disapline . Good thing , yeah ?

its the fact that once a diver with padi and you pay your money do the courses . you get knowledge . experience .

but it doesnt make you a master diver :no or a good diver .

Personally, I think I have forgotten more than most ever learn about this sport. Fortunantly, I still have a library to look up anything I have forgotten.

That's a fairly bold statement from someone who hasn't even been diving a year yet ...
