I would like to know what size deco bottles everyone feels trims out better. I have heard both 40cf and 30 cf are used. Are all 40 cf bottles the same size regardless of manufacturer? I know that the 30's come in at least 2 diff sizes(hieght/diameter), so which size works better for everyone?

Obviously I know that the size would have to meet that requirements of the dive, but as long as either would be sufficiant, which do you preffer...

I like the Luxfer 40's myself. The 30's are good for O2, but I wouldn't use one for anything deeper than 20'. The 80's are a lot of gas and I won't carry one unless it's called for in the given segment time for the particular dive. Remember, just adding a bigger bottle is not the optimum way to extend the deco and is poor planning incase of a failure. :)

I prefer the 40's. More versatile overall and no one ever died from carrying too much gas.

You know, everyone says that they prefer the Luxfer 40s, so that's what I got. But I want to know why.

If Luxfer 40s or 80s get down to about 1,500 PSI they get really light. If you figure that with a transfill whip I can get my O2 bottle to only 2,000 PSI, it doesn't take long for the cylinder to get light.

And once it's light, it's really buoyant, floats bottom up, and it's a pain in the ass to reach back, push the bottles out of the way and unclip the SPG.

It would seem to me, in my limited experience, that a bit heavier bottle would be more easily managed. Is it strictly the weight of the bottle at the start of the dive? Why do people like the Luxfer 40s and 80s?

Comments please.

I personally don't noticed a difference going from Luxfer or Catalinas.

a AL40 is great for just simple NDL dives and i am looking to carry higher O2 for just the fact of coming out of the water feeling that much better.

Any deco i will be on a AL80, just don't find the Al40 has what i want.. UNless its just for 100%O2 but typically i will have a AL80 of 50% and a 40 of 100%

40cf Luxfer for 02

80cf Luxfer for any other stage/deco gas

Having dove (dived, doved, duv?) both 30s and 40s for 02 I prefer the 40. Trims out better and 33% more gas is never a bad thing.

I only use 80's...like CD said no one ever died from carrying too much gas. Plus there is always the chance of doing another dive without having to top them off depending on what your doing and how you dive

There is also the new AL72 from HyMark and Catalina. A little slimmer than an 80.

Would be a suitable alternative in the 40cf class?

You can always hose clamp a weight to the light end.
