181 minutes, EAN32 in double lp 95s, max depth 45 FSW, average depth 30 FSW. Bob and
I came up because we were done diving (we both had gas left, but were cold, tired, hungry,
thirsty and out of no-bladder time).
(the goal of the dive, btw, was to reach 180 minutes)
A bit of a funny story about the dive: it was a shore dive, and we started at Mile Marker 4 along
Alii Drive (Big Island). We headed south, and our intended exit point was near the Kahaluu
Beach Park (aka "Snorkel Park"). Someplace along the way, someone along Alii Drive has a
habit of whacking golf balls off their lanai into the ocean. We came upon a cache of maybe
200 golf balls in about 35 FSW. Bob's a golfer (I'm not), so we rummaged thru them for a while
to pick up some of the fresher ones. Not having much in the way of pockets on our rigs, we started
stuffing the balls into our wetsuits and boots.
An hour later we reached the Menehune breakwater at the outside of Kahaluu, and after hanging
out for about 10 minutes watching the dive timer kick over 180 minutes we surfaced.
Kahaluu Beach Park is a very popular snorkeling spot on the Big Island for novice snorkelers.
Inside the breakwater it's usually very calm, and not very deep (you can stand in most places).
So, amid all of the snorkeling tourists here come these two Creatures From The Deep(tm) decked
out in tech rigs and doubles. We haul ourselves out and start climbing out of our rigs. Lots of
very strange looks from Aunt Bessie from Iowa and the rest of the tourists. But the icing on the cake
was the complete look of incredulity when Bob and I started pulling dozens of golf balls out of our
wetsuits
"You'll never believe what I saw at the beach today..."
