I bought a sued Apeks TX50 and I immediately had it serviced and the tech. who serviced it found this thing connected to the second stage. He didn't know what it was so he removed it and told me he had no clue what it was and has never seen one before. I'm curious as to what it actually is....

it's an inline shutoff, I have one on my Oceanic Omega that is hung under my chin on the necklace, because of how touchy the omega can be when it comes to free flows, you slide the black part one way and it shuts off the flow of air to the second stage, slide it back and it breathes normally again.

Apeks calls it a Freeflow Control Device.

From the Apeks website:

"Regulators not designed for cold water use are especially prone to freezing. Our simple yet extremely effective Freeflow Control Device contributes a significant advance in diver safety. In the event of 2nd stage freezing, freeflow can cause catastrophic loss of air.

With the FCD fitted to your regulator, a simple sliding action allows the diver to isolate the freeflowing 2nd stage and continue the dive using a secondary air source or alternatively, the diver can manually control the air flow allowing a safe ascent to the surface.

Designed to fit all regulators that use the standard 9/16" UNF hose fitting."

I knew what t was and I don't service Apeks...

Frankly, I'd be a bit concerned about the competence of a tech who didn't know anything about a device that is easily found on Apek's website.

Was the tech a regular Apeks tech?

I'm surprised often at how narrow many dive shops knowledge is in regard to the competetions features and products.

If I did not know what it was I think I could have figured it out without too much trouble. I agree with the others that are wondering about the competency of the "tech".
