I posted this a couple of days ago on the Gear forum but got no responses, so I'm trying once more on this forum in the hopes of a wider audience.
My husband bought an Akona gear bag around 1998 when he first took up diving. It's a large one (we can fit both BC's, both sets of fins, and then in outside pockets, both sets of boots). We are currently packing for a trip (haven't been diving since last March, can't wait!) and in the pocket where we put our boots, I found this other bag tucked inside. I guess it's been there since the gear bag was new and we never noticed it. It's a lightweight nylon drawstring bag, likely for carrying gear to the boat or beach, but at the bottom end there is a heavy cordura-type nylon panel attached, and at the end of the panel there are 3 D rings. (see photo). We cannot figure out what this panel and D rings are for. I tried the Akona web site, but I guess the bag is too old and is no longer listed. Has anyone ever seen one of these?

Not sure about the extra pad but the whole thing is designed to go over the entire bag to protect it when traveling. But that was before 9/11 and TSA. It is also designed to be used as a changing mat and maybe the extra material to stand on?

thanks Jim, but the bag in the photo is lightweight nylon and you can see the drawstring hanging from it. It is not a mat, and would not fit over the gear bag itself. Only the small square bit is heavy nylon. But perhaps you have something in the suggestion that it is to be used to stand something on? the tank maybe?

definately to protect the spetzer valve... you know, its all ball bearings these days...

I think Jim's got it.....

sounds like no one has this type of bag..... curious

Don't you know anything?

Clearly, it's a thing-a-ma-bob for a whatch-ma-call-it.

Can the lightweight bag fold up inside of the small square with the D rings on it? If so then it could be a pouch that attaches onto a larger Akona bag. The bag you have could be a beach bag or something like that.
