Don’t know if what I about to relate is true, but this is what I heard a few years back. There what a statue of Christ of the Abyss on the base. A hurricane removed the statue and folks believe it went to the bottom at whatever depth that would be.

When I was there in April our DM pointed out that a blennie had taken up residence on the plaque. He thought it had not been cleaned for a while due to that.

So did the cross come off?

Apparently so, it was not visible when we were there.

It was at Palancar Horseshoe. Not really that visible...Yes...the cross appears to be gone.

Thanks for the picture and the proper location.

Did you see it recently? I tried to look at it back in May, and discovered what it's like to have a sergeant major fish attack.

We were there two weeks ago. I did not notice the sergeant major, if it was still there.

Thanks to all who answered. I knew y'all would know.

Wasn't that at Chankanaab?

The block was the base for the christ of the deep. It fell down during hurricane gilbert i believe. I believe it was repared anmoved tochancanab where i imagine it still is. The plaque was installed when they put the christ statue up. Long before martin died

The one I saw was at Palancar Horseshoe. That was about a month and a half ago.

If I am understanding this correctly, it appears that the base was originally installed for the "Christ of the Deep" statue. The "Christ" statue was subsequently removed to Chankanaab leaving the base at Palancar Horseshoe. A cross was then erected on the base in memory of Martin. The cross is now gone and has been replaced by a sergeant major who just wants to raise a family. The circle of life is now completed. I love the sea.

I know of one off of Naples Italy and one off of Key Largo, Fl, USA.
The Italian one is at San Fruttuoso, near Portofino, in Liguria, quite some distance from Naples.
