I was watching some GUE SMB deployment videos on youtube, and the spool and SMB were kept separate and only assembled before deployment.

A friend of mine just took Fundies and she said they launched it already assembled.

I was wondering what was the reason for disassembling them for storage in the pocket. She doesn't know either.

Can anyone shed light on the reason for this?

Thanks.

My guess would be that a spool is used for a variety of reasons, so it would be easier to have them separate as you may want to use your spool without a smb (wreck, jon line etc). I'm sure someone will give you a more credible answer soon.

^^ that.

In open water it's much more likely that I'll be popping a bag during a dive, so I leave it attached.
In a cave it would be detached so that it can be readily used as a safety spool.

In Fundies class, it's usually left detached to increase task loading and to ensure that the complete skill is learned.

In class it's used for extra task loading. It was made pretty clear in my class that this wasn't meant to match what you would do in the real world.

Yea at the fundamentals level they do that just to see that you're capable of assembling it.

Later on they don't care about that

I see, that makes sense. Thank you everyone for the response.

Detached from what? You bring SMBs on cave dives?

/facepalm, good catch. Headed down for first cave training trip and made bad assumption after reading GUE standards. SMB is included in included in basic gear config, but obvs makes little sense in cave environment.
