I have the AOW but I was told that PADI AOW is supposed to qualify you to dive to 100 FSW and that to dive from 100-130 FSW you're supposed to have PADI "deep" specialty. Is this just a gimmick to sell more courses? Has anyone here taken PADI deep? thanks

sounds gimmickey to me, I took AOW that included a deep wreck dive to 60 foot.

I have taken the PADI Deep specialty. With a good instructor it's a good course. You learn a bit more about the nuances of diving to deeper depths.

My understanding is that...

PADI OW gives you the basics to dive to the recreational depth (bottom time, safety stops, ascent rate, nitrogen narcosis, etc.) of 130 FSW, but recommends you dive no deeper than 60 FSW.

PADI AOW further reinforces the information about diving to the recreational depth of 130 FSW; however, it recommends you dive no deeper than 100 FSW.

PADI Deep again further reinforces the information about diving to the recreation limit of 130 FSW and now your recommended maximum depth is the recreation limit.

Nothing is preventing you from diving to the recreational limit no matter what your training is, but they always say to dive within your training and experience. I kind of view it as a CYA as well as a gimmick to get more money.

Hey, stop making fun of the kids.......... :11ztongue

Under PADI rules - anything over 60' is deep.

Junko - What kind of diving do you want to do? The PADI Deep course is only as good as its instructor. Some shops do a good or great job and some treat it like a money maker. If I recall correctly, three of the four dives have to be below 60 feet (65 is fine) and only one has to be below 80 ft. Make sure you are getting what you want out of the course.

If you do want to explore deep diving, I would be suggesting that Nitrox would be a better start and then perhaps look into some technical training.

I only have OW, but I registered 62' on one of my last dives. I'd like to tell you is was real scary and challenging, but in fact, it was very similar to 59' 11" only 25" deeper.

You gotta push the envelope if you're wanna improve. I'm planning dive to 64' this weekend!
