I was certified in 1985 and now my 12 year old son is itching to get certified. Anyone know what is the recommended reading material for his Padi Jr. Open water cert? I have found a private instructor and he mentioned that I could just buy the book and he'll go over the questions. I just don't know what book to get and if I can find in here or on ebay.
thanks

If you log onto the Padi Pros page its got all the latest stuff on there and you can order online. You private instructor should have access to the website.

I would just buy the book, as you have no assurance that the chapter reviews were not already written in. To get a 12 year old excited about diving, sometime he needs that shiny new book, crispy pages, and the merit sew on badges. I would also throw in a "scuba diver" cap, T-shirt, and mug with scuba signs on it.

If I were to have my son do it again, I would probably buy the book, and the interactive DVD - as kids seems to be turned on more by multimedia training.

I can see that you could still white out the writings from the book, photocopy the page, and he would have to fill in the chapter review himself. But it just doesn't seem worth the headache.... But if he is already excited about diving, a used book is probably be OK.

You might need also to buy a current dive table, as the old one from 1985 is likely changed.

Your private Instructor should provide a Crew Pack to your son for the course, or at least tell you exactly what to buy and where to buy it.

Be careful buying things on ebay as they may not be the most current materials.

Your son will need (for a PADI certification)

Open Water Manual
RDP (dive tables and little book)
Open Water DVD (can be just viewed but purchase is recommended)
Log Book

You will also most likely need to purchase: (His personal gear)
Mask
Fins
Snorkel
Booties

If your private Instructor cannot provide these things or direct you to a place to purchase them, I suggest finding another Instructor or going to a dive shop in your area. You will probably need to go to a local shop to purchase everything anyway. You can do it all online, but only if you know exactly what you need to buy and you know what you're getting.

Have fun!

You need to just go too your local dive shop and buy the open-water crew pack.

The dive tables are no longer used, We now use the E-RDP , This is a small electronic device like a calculator and it comes in the Open-water crew pack.

We teach the RDP, although if the student wishes to invest in the eRDP or Wheel we'll happily teach that too. All of our rental gear has computers so we additionally teach their use in relation to the tables.

Crew Packs can come with RDP, eRDP or Wheel and cost varies with what version is purchased. The RDP version is by far the most common, and finding a shop that uses the eRDP or Wheel is somewhat rare. That's cool you teach it Jim.

Or you could buy the crewpack on eBay. There's a guy selling PADI crewpacks for very good prices.

Thanks for all the help, crew pack is what I was looking for. I wasn't sure what they were calling it these days. My instructor has offered to get it for me or have me pick one up myself. I have already bought my son all the gear, found a nice deal on craigslist and had everything serviced already. He'll be diving with a computer, scuba pro regulator, high pressure steel 72 for size and cousteau bc. I just need to find him a wetsuit as the womans wetsuit that came with the set just won't work.
