Some dewds tie it around their necks with a bungee (DIR dewds), others clip it to the BC (REC dewds) chest strap, in the so-called triangle area. You could also keep it attached by looping the hose through a D-ring..............

Try a bungee cord necklace around the neck. Make it yourself using elastic tubing and zip ties. The goal is to make a loop that is large enough to easily reach around your neck, with a second loop that snuggly fits around the mouth piece of the reg.

Tugging on the backup pulls the mouthpiece out of the smaller loop. Best feature is that the backup is under your chin all the time. Because you are the maker you can choose how snug you want it.

If you don't want to do the necklace thing, they make all sorts of gizmos for this. The one that has worked best for me looks like this: http://www.leisurepro.com/Catalog.aspx?op=ItemDisplay&ProductID=AQUOH2

The ball shaped ones you stick the mouthpiece in have never worked for me, they come out too easy. I found one on the bottom once that fit in the mouthpiece like a plug, turned out the bottom was a better place for it.

Having the backup reg in the bungee necklace is if you are using it has a backup and not an octo that you would donate. It should not be pulled free of the necklace. Using the bungeed back up would only be an option, IMO, if he will be donating his primary reg from his mouth in an OOA situation.

The best thing would be to get a scum ball type thing or someo other sort of break away attachment and affix it to his chest d-ring, so it is in the "golden triangle' area.

Wendy,

Thanks. I failed to include that I would be donating the reg in my mouth, and then using the necklaced 2nd. (I've had the good fortune to be trained this way from day one, and sometimes forget there is any other way:D)

I've encountered folks that are concerned about the necklace not being "breakaway". If you build it yourself, you can "tune" it for the desired retention.
