I am a chronic over-preparer. As I look at my dive book, it feels like I should have "more" in there. I just don't know what else I should be carrying/filing/documenting. As I stare at it right now, it contains:

C-card
Pens
Pencils
List of our common hand signals
Dive log
Waterproof Dive Log
PADI Tables
Notes/drawings from prev dives
Equipment list
Dive computer manual
Computer "wrench"
DAN Medical guide

Obviously, this is not my tool bag, nor my spare parts bag...I'm just wondering what you gals and guys carry around in your books.

Thanks in advance

Glen

CapitalOne :rofl3:

I store my collection of cert. cards in it when it is sitting on my desk. That way I allways know where they are. They are all in those clear plastic credit card, three ring binder pocket sheets so I take them out when I go on a trip or boat dive where I know I will only need one or two

If you make your own log pages you can put the sketches from previous dives on the back of the page for the dive in question or just leave room some where on the page for sketches. Buy water proof paper to print them out on if you must have a water proof log book.

You might want to carry a copy of your DAN insurance card so you have your member number handy. I just put my old card from last year in the log book I cary to the dive site. The member number doesn't change from year to year.

Maps of the dive site you frequent are handy. I have some of those Franco maps and some print outs of local sites like the Laguna Beach coast.

Yeah...most of the same stuff...The medical guide is usually in one of my bags, I don't have an equipment list...all my cards except for my OW card is in there (I keep that one in my wallet next to my Capital One card!:rofl3:) The AOW card is in the binder since that usually goes with me to the boat/site. The OW card is a contingency.

C-card, DAN card, tip money for boat captain and DM, logs, proof of auto insurance, Medicare and secondary medical cards, copy of driver's license, computer manual, extra pair of bi-focals, pen, condoms, Viagra and list of people to notify of I get in trouble.

I don't have a "dive book." I have a logbook. I keep my c-card in my wallet.

Tip Money, good suggestion. Last charter I had to go get cash from my car to tip the DM.

I'd re-think the last one...

Are you taking this on a boat or to a dive site? If someone knocks it overboard accidentally - or steals it from your gearbag/locker - you may have trouble getting back into the country with both your d/l and passport gone. I generally leave my passport in the room safe.

I've also heard of leaving a passport copy with a relative so they can fax it to you in an emergency.

I like to have my passport in my pocket when I'm flying overseas. Occasionally I've been places where they offer to pre-check luggage, I'd hate to get to the airport and remember that my passport was in my "dive book" in my already checked luggage.

Once I was asked to check my roller while boarding, without thinking about the fact that my passport, wallet and everything else was in it. Fortunately it arrived with me, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to enter the country. I don't do that anymore...

What's a "dive book"? (different agency maybe?) All I carry on a dive is my d/l, C-card, DAN card, credit card - 2 $10's and room/car keys in a waterproof Witz case on a lanyard around my neck.

I let the computer record all my dives and fill out my log when I get home.

10-4 on the Passport. I take it on the trip in the book and store it there when home. While in foreign lands, I secure it.

RE: "What's a dive book?". Webster reflects:

Dive: to plunge into water intentionally; also : to execute a dive b: submerge
+
Book: a set of written sheets of skin or paper or tablets of wood or ivory b: a set of written, printed, or blank sheets bound together into a volume

= Nothing fancy, nor anything from any strange, outer space agency. Just a little ol zippered portfolio that I keep my dive stuff in. ;)
