As oppose to figure out, by posting, what is scuba's orange shovel, why don't we post the must haves. Exclude the BC, regs, fins, masks.... But the attachments, improvements, mods, etcs should be included.

Mine is:

Surface marker - orange, 6 ft.
Whistle, hopefully will upgrade to an airhorn.
Scissor, in BC pocket.
Love my dive computer (just acquired), and I don't think I'll part with it.

a housed EPIRB will solve a lot of my issues.

My SS bling reel

Coordinates of secret sites

a decent boat dog

A good, strong, well-focused dive light ... my 18W Salvo is one of my favorite pieces of gear.

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

What is a diver's must have?

Air.

A slate to draw unknown fishes and find them in the book,
HID light,
Ear juice,
A retractor for the console (oups...)

Air horns and whistles complement each other. Air horn is louder, but the whistle doesn't need tank air. I bring both.

In addition to a big 8-1/2' x 6" surface marker (crude orange garbage bag plastic) I also bring a 44" x 4" DSMB with 30' of cord to send up from 20' depth. It's a "Don't Run Me Over" signal.

Other important surface signalling gear include a mirror and a light.

I wrap a couple sheets of waterproof paper around the mirror and it doubles as a slate. A light is a good thing to carry on ALL dives, even daytime dives, just in case you end up doing the extra long drift all the way past dusk.

$$$$$$$$$$

A good buddy and or understanding wife/hubby.

As everyone...lots of CASH...in my case a loaded credit card..again...:)

Must have...Space to put all my gear.
Must have...Big truck to haul my dive gear
Must have...time to dive
Must have...A very UNDERDERSTANDING wife whom agrees that diving is relaxing...;)
Must have....cold beer after a days diving.
Must have....Scooter
Must Have...18 watt light. To blind the fish of course
Must have...a second job.

And there ya go.

Good buoyancy control?:D

Seriously, for around here I'd say a can light. I own enough gear to get anyone in the water with me (diving dry) but I don't have two can lights . . . so I am trying to convince my newbie buddy that is the first piece of gear he should buy.
