Knowing your cylinder pressure is good. Knowing your depth is also good. Have gauges that tell you both. I personally like depth on my wrist and pressure on my hip.

if you are also getting a computer - it will tell you your depth (an air integrated one will also tell you your pressure)
if you are not getting a computer for a while you will need both guages.

You need a SPG and depth gauge. If you get a dive computer the depth gauge function is normally included in the computer so you don't need a seperate depth gauge. You can also get an air integrated (AI) computer which includes the SPG functionality in the computer.

Wow, lighting fast responses.

I think i'm swinging towards getting a Mares Nemo which is not air integrated. I'll definetely need the SPG, but i'm just thinking as a precaution (or something) whether a depth gauge would be good - perhaps just in case???

I dive with a Suunto Vyper computer and have a Citizen watch which both have depth and I really dont like bulky consoles so I only dive with a single guage for air only.

Hi all,

I'm about to buy my regs and DC so just wondering what guages are necessary. Should i just get a SPG or a depth as well?

Mandatory (or should be): SPG, bottom timer, depth (air-integrated computer does all three, plus additional functions)

Although some (like me) prefer a separate analog SPG...

i'd just use the computer (make sure you keep a spare bettrery in your "save a dive kit")- buy a really cheap watch as a backup timer (from whatever your equivalent to wallmart is) - if your computer ever craps out, abort the dive - you should be able to tell when your in the 15-20ft range and just do your safety stop.

An SPG is needed , a depth gauge is needed , a timing device is needed these two are usually intigrated as a computer that goes on your right wrist and a compass is needed and goes on your lt wrist .
