What does a "Pit Diver" do in hydroplane racing

I've done this a few times in San Diego, the group travels So Calif. on the tour. pays $50-100. a day or so plus gas and shared room. Kind Fun up close to the racing. You wait on a boat in full gear ready to dive. Safety boat at each end of track. Jet boats have a break away capsule with the driver strapped inside, and small oxygen tank. (If they are conscious).
