Very simple. Don't dive with anyone you are uncomfortable with. I prefer to dive solo anyway. Unless the op requires you to dive with a buddy. Then you find another op. That's part of every plan.
Call the op to see if they require you to dive with a buddy or follow a DM. No? Great! Book me for XXX.
You do? Bye. Hang up.

Every instabuddy is a gamble. I treat any dive with people I don’t know as a solo dive.
Not necessarily true. If the instabuddy is trained and certified to a strict standard then it's not a gamble because you know exactly what to expect. I have traveled to foreign countries and done somewhat complex dives with new buddies, and it was fine because they had the same equipment configuration and followed the same protocols.

Sounds like me, at twenty dives with my airII I was almost a card carrying veteran

Your ease of life has nothing to do with what other people do but how you react to it

Hey man I'm living on the Sunny Coast at the moment Alex, wanna go dive the Brissy

Do you know how to solo
Hey mate, sure hit me up lets go for a dive. I actually dived the Brissy yesterday (first time since the typhoon ripped off most of the upper superstructure). I want to do Flinders Reef next time out but yea we can work out a date and time. Yes, I am trained self reliant diver with reasonable solo experience as you probably know most of the dive operators on the Sunny coast cater for the holiday type diver and the one off's and so they don't want you diving solo on their boats. Usually they mandate you to having a buddy.

Cheers Paul

Partially agree. I get your point that if you have been trained to follow the same procedures and use the same equipment there is less of a discovery phase. However, even within that community, I have met people with vastly different risk appetite and never know how people react under pressure regardless of their training. My personal preference is to consider myself solo until I have some experience diving with a new team member, regardless of their background. Probably overly conservative but it served me well so far.

Well considering the dozens of dives I've done with Sunreef and 99% with Scubaworld have been solo
Usually must not be my category
I've even had customers on the boat on the way out to the site tell me I won't be permitted to go solo

The usual funny ideas from usual people

I know some people that dive solo because nobody will dive with them. :)
