Go to the pool. Hover at 6 feet, 5 feet, 4 feet, 3 feet, 2 feet, 1 foot.
Feel the balance.
There is no hurry.

Flood your mask and enjoy the moment.
Dive without a mask.

Try how it feels to dive with just one fin. Or with no fins.

Try to turn around a full circle.

Try some frog kicks. Yes, you can do them more efficiently.
Try some flutter kicks. Yes, you don't need to bend the knee all that much.
Try dolphin kicks, it's difficult, but once you get it, it can be fun.
Can you swim SIDEWAYS?
Can you reverse?

Get a feel about the water. How is your interplay with it?
ENJOY your diving!!!
Depth comes later.

I've been to Jupiter once and it was very much like Caribbean diving - clear blue water with good viz and lots to see. Would definitely recommend a Nitrox cert before going, and even though both Cozumel and Jupiter are drift diving Jupiter seems a little more advanced to me (not really sure why, perhaps the square diving profile and choppier seas topside). Hotels there were double or more what I would pay in Cozumel. Compared to Cozumel diving is a little more expensive, and meal prices were more expensive, but not as bad as the Florida panhandle -- at least where we went, YMMV.

I hear good things about diving Key Largo and have seen some good videos, but I have not been. I have planned 2 trips that I had to cancel last minute, each because of Covid. Hotel options are surprisingly limited and AirBnB options were also. Hotel prices were definitely 2 or more times expensive than Cozumel, depending on time of year. Diving was around the same price as Cozumel. I believe the diving in Key Largo (at least with large dive ops) tends to be more shallow than Cozumel, so that might be good for new divers. Not sure how currents are there.

For both, I do think the even if you can drive to Florida it might still be cheaper to fly to Cozumel. So for me, if I go for a week it would probably be Cozumel -- but I wouldn't rule out Florida if you needed or wanted to stay in the U.S.

1.) Dive locally - likely lakes or quarries. Fresh water, cold below the thermocline, limited viz. and not a whole lot to see, but can be fun.
Yes, cold water limited visibility dives can be fun.
Really exciting, I mean.

It becomes especially interesting when visibility drops to zero. Dive by touch. It's truly a new world! Depth does not need to be more than six feet. Please use a line tender.

Recovery dives. Cleanup dives. Lots to do.

ps. I am using sidemounted cylinders because I want to have two of them (and a flexible back) but a single backmounted cylinder would be just as safe at these depths.
