Going to Cozumel in May, Hotel Cozumel. Doing 2 morning and 1 afternoon dive each day. What did y'all do when you aren't diving? Just curious. I could be entertained sitting on a chair doing nothing..

So, here are a few things to do in Cozumel when out of the water: Visiting the San Gervasio Mayan ruins, exploring the Punta Sur Eco Beach Park and spotting for wildlife in the marshland. Of course, there’s always relaxing on the beach or by the pool

My wife Nathalie wrote up a few of them here

My group always schedules a full day to tour the east side of the island. There are little beach clubs / restaurants every couple of miles along the coast road with better beaches than on the west side. It's a bit rustic over there since there is no grid electricity; many places run sound systems and other stuff from batteries that they haul back and forth from town. We usually cross over on the Trans de Cozumel road which is the extension of Benito Juarez in town; it hits the other coast at Mescalito's Beach Bar, which is always our first stop. We take a leisurely course down the east side (with several stops) to Rasta's at the south end of the coast road before crossing back on the road that becomes Melgar when it turns up the west coast. South past Rasta's there is the Punta Sur Park; I have never been there but there is lots of info on line about it.

The best way we have found to make this excursion is to charter a taxi for the day. It will probably cost about the same as a vehicle rental and you don't have to worry about having a Designated Driver (you do NOT want to get a DUI or in car crash on Cozumel!). The taxistas all know the drill; you can ask any of them about it and cut a deal to take you. The guy we always use for this is very patient at the stops we make and never rushes us. I do NOT recommend making the trek on rented scooters; in addition to the other risks you take on with these things, when you are over on the east side you are miles away from any rescue you might need if something goes wrong and cellphone coverage is spotty.

Have a great trip!

During one of my non-diving days, I rented a scooter and went out to the Mayan Bee Sanctuary for a tour. The tour cost $13 per person. I learned about three species of bees living in the hives onsite. It was really interesting watching the behavior of the bees especially the species that posts a guardian bee to watch the entrance to the hive. At the end of the tour, there is a honey tasting. The honey produced by the Yucatan bees is highly floral in taste and much sweeter than the conventional honey we buy in grocery stores.

We also found it to be an interesting day. I don't remember the cost, but I remember walking away feeling like it was a good value.
We took a taxi and he waited for us. Again, it seemed like we got a fair deal. I couldn't tell you what the price was.
It could have been the time of year and what was blooming, but we thought that the honey was not nearly as sweet as what we're used to. It almost had a slightly bitter undertone.

We had a great day one time one day when we started from downtown and started walking east. We walked for a couple hours at least, and had a wonderful lunch at a little loncheria before heading back. Our patronage was really appreciated. Very few "Americans" made it back into their neighborhood.

Just me, but I found doing 2 + 1 to be pretty tiring. On the boat t 7 or 8, return 12 or so, lunch, quick rest, back out on the boat at 2, back at 3:30-4, etc.

I much prefer 2 dives in the morning, quick shower and lunch either at resort or in town, followed by a hammock and good book and/or a nap. With maybe a late afternoon or dusk dive and then to happy hour. Dinner usually in town.

The time seems to get eaten up even with that schedule

Good recs above, was not aware of the Bee location will definitely hit that next time

if i was diving 3x a day i prob wouldnt have any energy left to do anything else. lol

they have a great pool area. exploring town or going for dinner in town is always nice. we have visited the ruins and enjoyed that. maybe toss in some night dives along shore there. thats our fav part. they usually have some "entertainment" on stage at night. my wifes loves that stuff. me....not so much. but it helps pass the time.

I'm going to need more information about this "entertainment"

haha you know. the typical all inclusive nightly entertainment staff try to put on some type of show, or they do games etc. they were pretty basic the times we have been there but i heard they were trying step things up a bit.

That's my general routine as well. I usually am there for two weeks, so I am not in a huge hurry to get my dives in.
