What determines a diver to be DIR?

When you made the comment on how you would match your skills against half the people on the boat it sounded like you were bragging and trying to put them down because they weren't as accomplished as you are. I haven't been on a boat trip yet that didn't have varrying skill levels on it. It just came off like you were trying to feed a big ego or something.

But now if I understand you right it was they who were trying to perport that they were something they were not and their skill levels told a different story. So please accept my apologies sir.

You've taken something I've said out of context. Why do you think I have a big head? I actually humbled myself to real DIR divers, as I aspire to finish the class and become a better diver for it.

The topic of the original post led me to share the experience I had the other day with some 'proclaimed' DIR'ers. It fit the post in that their training did not make them what they claim to be. I make no claims.

I'm not sure why you've taken such a microscopic view into my post, but it must have struck a cord somewhere. If that is the case, I'll apologize. I make no judgement on anyone until I dive with them. I dived with these guys and made judgment that half of them were great divers and half needed to go back to OW 101. I wouldn't have shared if not for the topic of this thread.

Hmmm.... the adage that history repeats itself is alive and well. I suggest reading old posts to determine current state of affairs.

hey scuba Rambos,DIR???Dives to over 300 feet and deep cave penetrations have been done long before DIR even was thought of.And guess what ,they survived without DIR systems and philosophy,some of those Divers didn,t have a c card either but thousands of dives to show for.Is every diver without a GUE c card a second class diver in your opinion?I dont think so!!!

Not all of them survived.

Why so defensive? This is a legitimate query in the DIR forum and has received many valid answers. There are well-established threads elsewhere on this board if you wish to express anti-DIR views...

There is a lot of Old Cave/Tech divers dude, matter of a fact there are a lot of bold Cave/Tech divers out there, but we are missing a hell of a lot of old/bold tech divers for some odd reason.

Not at all. I have many areas of diving where I am a neophyte and I try to learn as much as possible through training and observation. As a matter of fact, I booked that dive knowing I would probably be at the bottom of the rank and file on the boat. When I booked it, they told me almost everyone was going to be diving trimix, and that I was one of the few going not certified for trimix. Upon reaching the dock, I could tell that I was going to learn a lot about DIR before my class starts later this summer. I did a lot of observation that day. Some impressed me, some didn't. The ones that didn't, fell short of where I am in my diving. This is not a bash, but an example of where training ended and habits begin.
