my new Canon 40d is on the way!!!! My questiom what is the best size and speed cf card to use? extreem, ultra I,II,III. there is a pro model that was 237.00 for 2gig wow
does it make that much of a difference?
thanks mike

I have several of the 4GB SanDisk cards, Ultra II model. Never had a problem with them, $33.99 at Costco right now. I usually get 2 dives in on a 4GB card shooting RAW.

Generally you'll want something fast, ultra 3 would likle be find for those 10mpx images. I'd recommend several 2 GB cards over a single 8gb card (for example) this way if you lose a card you don't lose everything!

Sandisk has a pretty killer rebate going now until 6/29 on their Extreme III CF and SDHC cards. They're awesome cards and you won't be able to beat the price with the rebate. The rebate is available from select online retailers... Here it is at Adorama.

I use everything in my 40D - from cheapies to the expensive stuff.

I'd get 4GB cards or higher, personally.

I have and love the Transcend 8GB cards - and they are $36! Can't say enough about these cards. There is no real life difference that I can see between these and the Extreme or Ultra SanDisks that I also have.

Right now SanDisk has a rebate thing on and it brings their 8GB cards down to about $36, too, when you buy three. The rebate is not cash back, but a Visa thing to use wherever Visa is accepted. I just ordered some of these the other day.

Frankly, you'll hear a lot about which brand of card to buy, but I have yet to notice any difference in camera or in my card reader...my main three are the Transcends, SanDisk (but I will not pay more than double what the Transcends are) and the Lexar Pros.

There are a lot of good cards. I use Sandisk Extreme III. Transcend is a good one as well.

All I can say is beware of buying SanDisk on Ebay. It seems there area lot of fake Sandisk cards there.

Not picking nits but when I do the math with the Sandisk Extreme III rebate, the price for 3 8GB SD cards comes out to be $28.32 each after the rebate. Alcina: Not sure if there is a duty, exchange rate or currency difference but from one of the listed participating dealers, they can be had for $74.99 each with no tax and free shipping to the States and each comes with a MicroMate USB 2.0 card reader. Either way, a $36 or $28.32, it's a damn good deal.

The rebate won't work with eBay purchases. It goes without saying to be cautious of buying anything on eBay.

Mako, evening to ya!

I have had good luck with the Lexar Professional CF cards. These that I have are a lil old (2006-2007) and are the 133x speed, However they are still going strong and I have never needed to update to anything else. What I do use though to keep from having to spend $$$ on extra cards is a Wolverine media storage device. The one I have stores 160 gigs, however they have them larger now.

I would suggested visiting our forum over on POTN to get some great information of anything and everything there is to know about your camera.

Hope this helps, and be sure to post us some pictures you've gain from your 40D. Its a nice tool I bet. I'm a happy owner of the 30D model.

Safe diving,

Ken

Driftin' - where were you when I ordered these things? I always order my camera gear in the US, so it's just a matter of me finding a different, higher, price. The best I could find when I ordered was $79, making them $36 each with the rebate. $28 is a freakin awesome price for an 8GB card! And I could have used that extra 8 bucks on something else ;)
