I was born with a fascination of fish and the undersea environment. A days visit to an aquarium was always one of the best days of my life as a kid. Later in life i was led astray to a landlocked state for education. Being born and raised in RI, the loss of my "high-school sweetheart" the Atlantic caused me to require the Big Drink more than ever. I always wanted to become certified as a young'un but it was always just a little out of reach. my separation from the briney deep lunged me into a bloodthirsty, tenacious fight toward the diving community that it allowed me to pull the trigger and get certified. I'm now regretting my lost years that i could have been underwater instead of on top of a mountain.

I can only hold breath underwater for 40 secs tops. SCUBA is the only way to extend it.

Had a pretty good run in this land-based food chain for 35 years so I thought I would try my luck in a new food change to mix things up. :D

My parents had a cool aquarium when I was a kid and I always wanted to figure out a way to get inside with the fishes! I never even knew "Diver Certification" was an option until I walked into my first dive shop in 1981. Now I'm blessed to have been able to make SCUBA Instruction my career for the last 21 years and I couldn't be happier. That initial 200 bucks was the best money I ever spent! Thanks Mom and Dad!!

Having perfected the fine art of Abusing Alcohol, I was looking for a viable past-time while I was in the NAVY. Ship I was stationed on was looking at 4-6 weeks of training at GITMO Cuba with too much free time on my hands. I took up snorkeling with immediate plans to progress into SCUBA inspired by Mike Nelson (Lloyd Bridges) of TV's Sea-Hunt fame now that I had gotten sober enough to do so.

Has been 19.5 years now of Diving and Sobriety! You didnt expect this sort of answer when you posted did you?

Now the only bubbles I blow are intentional underwater not spending wasted weekends snorkeling in mudpuddles in alleys!

I have been diving since I was a kid but not certified till last year, I was basicly taught to dive by a NYC Firefighter/rescue diver who was my next door neighboor. I had promised him a few things and one of them that when I could afford it I would get certified. Shortly after moving to Texas he was lost in the line of duty and I made sure that no matter what I would complete all of things he made me promise. After I got my c card (this was the last promise I had to complete) I spoke with his wife and she asked I send her a copy of my card up so she could place it on his grave.

I have beed hooked since I was 8 years old and diving in "FDNY borrowed equipment"

why did I get into scuba?

GEORGE IRVINE III why of course

when I was a kid, I used to have a GI3 action figure with kungfu grip and when you pulled on the string in its back, it would shout "STROKE!"
