Hi there, a weird question but how much do people usually tip on 2 tank boat dives in cozumel? Also if you are diving all week with a crew, when do you tip them, daily, at the end, at the beginning? Thanks!

I would say the standard is 5.00US per tank...I tip everyday since I am never sure if I will have same crew usually do but if someones day off falls in the middle of the week that person may not get their share...and when I say standard...I mean that is a guide...of course tip more if you get better than expected service and less if less;)

this has been debated MANY times on this board...:D

That is my standard, 5 bucks a tank a day and more for better service of course. See we agree! :-)

I usually tip $5 per tank at the end of each day. For a particularly good dive I'll tip a bit more. If bottom time is limited too much by the DM, I may tip a little less.

Ditto ... $5 per tank, at the end of each day, and then usually some extra the last day (especially when we've had the same crew all week ...)

It's not a weird question.... for whatever reason it's asked a lot followed by a lot of debate. $5 per tank is the standard but don't hesitate to tip more if you received good service or less or none if it was a bad trip. By no means are you required to tip.

Christi covers it in her Cozumel FAQ sticky thread here:

I agree with the suggested amounts and timing. When in Mexico, I typically tip $5 per tank and give it at the end of each day. Sometimes I add a little more depending on various factors.

When not in Mexico, what do folks usually tip? For instance, I understand tipping $5 per tank in Cozumel since the nature of the diving requires the DM to work pretty hard and dive both dives. But, when in other locales such as the Caymans, I find that the DM typically dives the first dive but sits out the second dive. The DM and crew works hard to get the gear ready, get you in, etc. but what do people do when the DM does not dive the 2nd dive. Still tip the standard $5 per tank (or a little more in Caymans given the devalued US dollar there) or reduce it?

$5 per tank has been the standard for quite a while, so for a 2 tank, 2 dive trip with my wife and myself it's $20 per day. I pay usually in 5's so it is easier for the DM to split with the captain.

I also usually carry some extra cash in case the DM or Captain do something extra, for what ever reason. I have no problem tipping extra for a job done over and above normal services.

Then at the end of the week if we have been diving mostly with the same crew, and they have done good job, we will give them a little extra the last day.

people remember things like that and next time you come, they will try even harder to show you a good time.

I have dove in Hawaii (Maui) and Grand Bahamas and used the same tipping policy with no "funny looks", if you know what I mean.

$10 for the DM and $10 for the captain for a two tank dive.
