No, you're right but it's just that... the repetitive, redundancy of the task when something doesn't get done right. But hey, it's only your life support equipment, right? :shakehead

You check it before you backroll, silly. In Cozumel, I dive on very small 6-packs and not a lot of room for divers to set up their gear. There are DMs in Cozumel I would trust with my life, some of the finest divers I've had the pleasure to know. Don't go giving me that lame argument. I've been around too long, had that attitude, and came to realize that those DMs are less likely to make a mistake than the typical diver.

To each his/her own. I'm the only one responsible for myself... how is that lame?

But it's good that you check. I've found that it takes more time for me to untangle a kinked hp spg hose that was routed to the right side then if I just set it up myself. I'm sure it doesn't happen often but I eliminate it by doing it myself. All too often I see people get sloppy and not check their gear putting all their faith in someone else or even worse, not even know how to set it up because they've always relied on someone else to do it. Yikes!

I was only joking about the tip.... The DM's I dive with know that I want to do it myself and are more than happy to let me. And it's never been an issue on the 6-pack boats I dive from. YMMV.

Ugh... now can we just get along? :D

When I'm diving a technical dive, I set up my own gear. When I dive rec, I don't care because I always check my gear anyway. If the DM wants to help the senorita with the heavy, steel tank, be my guest. ;)

Hi there, a weird question but how much do people usually tip on 2 tank boat dives in cozumel? Also if you are diving all week with a crew, when do you tip them, daily, at the end, at the beginning? Thanks!

I have to agree with many others comments of $5/tank I believe thats pretty normal...start there. Tipping is a funny thing. Some business owners believe that tipping is a form of surplus compensation for their employees. Not so. Its for good service.......period. Not for ANY service in general. Most have no idea where the term "TIP" comes from. In its beginning, TIP meant "To Insure Promptness". Customers would "TIP" as soon as they arrived at the establishment in order to get quick service.

Many have decided that TIPs are just part of the bill.............not in my book. TIP your DM/Capt. as you would want to be tipped. For those DM that I dive with all the time, I TIP at the end of the trip. Others, I either tell them I will take care of them at the end or do it daily.

Urban legend

If it were true, it would be "TEP", since the proper word would be "ensure", not "insure".

Wow....kinda cool..this topic comes up about every 6 months on this board.....always fun to read all the input. .....I usually TEP about 5 per tank, or 20 spot for the wife and I on a 2 tank day.....just the Gdog's 2 bits...lol

Hey Mike: Don't feel bad, I got ripped on this one too about 6 months ago(your absolutely right about the time frame Gdog) as a I also had the same understanding. But in the end what does it really matter if the wee few of us, who don't have the best command of the English language, fail to realize that it should be 'tep' if in all reality, a 'tip' in this context, really and truly mean nothing more?

Gordon: The next time (in roughly 6 months) someone needs to be set straight on the topic, Wikipedia also has a good and lengthy explanation of the word. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tip
