Myself and 4 other underwater photographers chartered a boat this August to photograph the whale sharks. I had heard lots of stories, but it was just as great as the stories. We could follow the whale sharks and when we got tired, we just floated for a while until the next one came along. We were out from 7am to 3pm each day and it was pure bliss. We had thousands of great photos.

I posted some of my photos in a trip log on my website Whale Shark Trip

I highly recommend doing this, but if you are serious as a photographer, dont go on the big charter (cattle cars), but get on a chartered boat.

I am going back next year and have chartered the same boat for a peak week next year.

Awesome!

Was this outside of Cancun?
I was there a few years ago and we could see 10s of them swimming around at a time. Some REALLY big awsome fish :D.

We chartered our boat from Isla Mujeres and traveled about 16 miles out. There are day boats with lots of people that come from Cancun and stay for about 2 hours. We had our own small boat because we wanted to stay all day and do multiple sessions of in and out of the boat.

They are so awesomely large and harmless (as long as you get out of the way!) A few had prop scars, but not as frequent as I see with manatees.

A recommended experience for all!
