Had just finished a shore dive with my sister and nephews from the Sand Dollar/Den Lamen pier and was slow getting out of the water.

People on the pier spotted dolphins and some snorkelers jumped off th pier following directions form the spotters. I had about 1100 psi left on my tank so I put my head down and followed.

About a 350m swim -out in from of the center of Chogogo, about 75 meters past the drop off, I could hear dolphins, but didn’t see them. But I did see a rather large tail. Rememberd my go pro was handy and started filming. Dropped to about 5-7 meters for this video.

Whale Shark - Bonaire - 8 April 2025

Took the video over to my old course instructor and asked for an estimate of the size (I was too in shock to try to estimate it myself at the time). Based on some horse-eyed jacks swimming there, he guessed approximately 9m or 30 ft. Very skinny shark. Not sure if young or sick. I’ve heard tales that dolphins will escort fragile, young, and/orsick shale sharks - maybe that was happening here.

Highlight of all my trips and hundreds of Bonaire dive, and it happens right on my front porch.
