True Mtndiver,
But I've spent time with dolphins, and I've spent time with cows.
I tend to think of whales as giant dolphins, which I regard as much more intelligent than cows.
Have you followed the story about the dolphins that were swept out into the gulf during the hurricane? How they recognized their trainers, and started doing flips when they showed up? You'll never ever see a cow do that.

I'll admit it. I have a serious problem with some of the world's "cultures".
I saw one where they believe it is better to skin their dogs alive and standing up, so they won't get fur and dirt on the meat.

Well, hey...at least it's all in the name of science...

Yeah, they're conducting a study to see how much money can be made from hunting whales. :-(

Like Riddler said, the taking of the whales is approved by the Commission, and they're not endangered. Would you rather the meat go to waste?

Yeah, except the votes which support Japan in the whaling commission all seem to come from countries which recieve substantial aid from......... that's right, Japan.

Aid = bribes :reaper:

"Japan's Fisheries Agency claims the hunt is aimed at studying the whales' feeding patterns and their effect on fish stocks."

If they're dead, they don't have feeding patterns. And if they don't have feeding patterns because they're dead, there will be more fish stocks.
DAH!
You shouldn't have to be a "scientist" to figure this out.

I can't help but wonder if they even got a government grant to study whether dead whales eat fish or not. :dead:

Well, I don't think you have to be a scientist to know that it would be impossible to follow a whale around and make notes on your clipboard about what he ate. 'Bout the only way is to study the contents of his stomach. That's usually fatal for the subject.

Maybe you can get a grant to study how to make whales vomit into a LARGE ziplock?

So a creature's right to exist is determined by it's intelligence? Just trying to understand your reasoning here.

Not saying that at all.
I just think there are certain animals that were put on this planet to be eaten. Animals that reproduce rapidly, and have no discernable personality, such as deer, cows, rabbits etc.; flocking birds like chickens, quail, ducks, geese; schooling fish like tuna, sardines, squid, etc; bugs like crabs, lobster, crawdads etc. To me, these are the food animals.
Animals that don't reproduce as rapidly and abundantly, and display certain familial personalities like bears, canines, apes, whales, raptors, octopus, etc.; are all off of my personal food list.
Just my simple minded, and sometimes confused, view. Of course, those rules would change dependant upon my level of desperation.
In a nutshell, I wouldn't eat an eagle if there are plenty of chickens around.

Favorite unknown quote: "If God didn't intend for me to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of meat".

But, it's stuff like this that really torques me off: http://www.navs.org.uk/news/campaigns/burning_dogs.htm

So what are whales made out of again?

This whole argument seems to come up every couple of months. The Japanese, Norwegians, and the Eskimo have all eaten whale for centuries. There's probably a few things that they don't agree with that Americans do as well. Or English, Australians, Indians, Israelis, Turkish, Russians etc etc etc.
