I am a new diver who's doing my certification dives next weekend. I'm 6'05" and 160 lbs, and looking at the sizing charts for off the rack wetsuits any suit remotely tall enough for me was for a 200-220+ lb person. I didn't even try fitting an off the shelf one because of this, because I figured they'd be way too loose and not warm, and I already get very cold while swimming.

After reading around, I bought a custom wetsuit from Aquaflite. I can't talk about the quality or fit yet, as they don't think it'll be done and ship out until Friday, which honestly is pretty good considering I ordered it Thursday. I bought a 3 mm fullsuit with a sleeveless jacket that can be worn over the fullsuit or not, depending on the temp. I paid a little extra for a yellow sidestripe, a relief zipper, and a key pocket, and including shipping I paid $368.

Part of this was the customization charge. $94 surcharge for the custom suits. They make a paper cutout for cutting the neoprene with all your measurements. If you tell them to save it and your body doesn't change, they can reuse this cutout for future suits and the $94 surcharge would then not apply. Since I plan on getting a 7 mm when it gets a little colder, this means I could wait on ordering until verifying the 3 mm fits well.

The sidestripe ran $29.50, the relief zipper (men's suits only) ran $22.95, and the key pocket ran $7. The sleeveless jacket was a $58 addition to just the fullsuit. If I hadn't gotten any of these upgrades, my 3 mm custom wetsuit would have cost just $251!

There are 28 measurements you'll need a friend to take, so it's quite a custom fit. She said if you have an oddly shaped body, you're welcome to take additional measurements, as long as they are all referenced (chest, waist, hips are referenced to shoulders, while thighs and calves referenced to ankle).

There's a bunch of different suit styles and additions to chose from, in 1.5, 3, 5, and 7 mm. Teresa was great on the phone when I as a new diver who's never worn a wetsuit called with questions. Even if you don't call ahead of time, they will call you after they make the paper cutout, let you know if a measurement looks wrong, and confirm all your choices before they start cutting the suit out. And the week turnaround they think my suit will take is really fast.

More than off the rack suits, but they are the cheapest custom wetsuits I found, and the reviews I could find were all quite positive. If you're interested I'll update with how my suit fits and the quality once I receive it.

I have an aqua flight wetsuit with the ocean liner neoprene. It has been one of the best purchases yet. The fit is amazing and the quality seems pretty good

I have been having trouble finding a wetsuit,I'm plump and only 5', yes I'm a woman I have this old Neosport ,size 10 that fits just perfect but it's so old and stretchy I'm not sure what size to get, according to the size chart there is no way I should be able to fit into a size 10 .i have a 3 mm velocity from bare size 16 but the arms are too log and the neck hole to big.there must be a better way of sizing ,because I by on the Internet,
I think wetsuits are like pantyhose: 1 size fits nobody. Growing up as a farm boy, nothing fit me "off the rack" - too much shoulders, not enough butt.

Lately that has changed a little bit, but off the rack is mostly nonsense for something were fit is very important. Being comfortable and warm is something that affects every dive.

I have always used custom fit wetsuits. Yes they cost more. But I claim they are worth it.

Contact Elios. They are one of the longest running, custom wetsuit manufacturers in the business. They have a huge selection of neoprene to choose from and are very easy to work with.

I just picked up a 3 piece Freedive suit from them (1 hooded jacket, 1 jacket w/o hood and 1 pant) made from one of their softest and most flexible freediving neoprenes, for less than the cost of my last Fourth Element Proteus. A scuba suit using a more durable neoprene would have been even cheaper. You will take a series of 30 or so measurements and send them along with your neoprene selections. They are very good at giving suggestions on neoprene depending on your intended uses for the suit.

They are very observant as well. The dimensions on both my jackets were different in the neck area as the hooded jacket needed to accommodate my dreads. I didn't mention this beforehand and they caught the discrepancy and sent an email inquiring about my neck size. After some pictures and a little laughter, they got it all dialed in. My suit was finished and in my hands in 2 weeks which I thought was impressive considering they are in Italy.

I am 5'8" and 150 lbs with an athletic build. I fit into most off the rack suits pretty well but after using my Elios, I can honestly say I will never buy off the rack again. Custom suits fit better in every aspect which causes them to be more efficient at doing their job, which is keeping you warm. The huge selections of neoprene in terms of how flexible, how durable and what colors are just the icing on the cake.

Why not just try a new neosport 10? Sites like Leisurepro allow to exchange it for a different size for free...

The suit arrived yesterday. My fiancée took a couple quick pics which I put here to show the fit. Basically the only place it doesn't press up against my skin in on my lower back, but since that curves in I think having it touch my skin there would be hard, if not impossible. There's also some room under the armpits, presumably for arm motion (I'm new to wetsuits). The suit feels good wearing it, not loose, not tight, not too short like my rental one (not comfortable for a guy!). Neck seems tight but I've always hated stuff on my neck, and a good seal is probably worth a snug neck fit while diving.

Pictures show with and without the sleeveless jacket I bought with it so it can be adjusted for different water temps. I'm happy so far, and I plan on getting a 7 mm suit and hood as the water temps decrease this fall, but I want to dive with this one first.

Since I became PADI OW certified last weekend I'll have to plan a trip with my fiancée shortly so I can try it diving.

Well said, Giffenk! Your body is like your thumbprint; no body is the same and no wetsuit should be either.

I am a new wetsuit specialist here at 7TILL8 custom fit wetsuits and I believe our custom pattern technology creates precise patterns for each one of our customers. Although we build everything by hand, our online measuring process allows us to make custom wetsuits accessible to anyone in the world, including those nice ladies out there!
