Letters and complaints have been sent out to SEMARNAT (Mexican equivalent of EPA), PROFEPA (another gov't agency for environmental protection), SAGARPA (equivalent of Fish & Wildlife) and there has been no response from any of them (other than to say that it's out of their jurisdiction). There is one fisherman in particular who boasts online about how many sharks he kills on a daily basis (he claims that in August it was in excess of 100 sharks), and nobody seems to be able or willing to stop him..

Isnt buying the shark off them giving them the incentive to catch more to make more money,i understand them buying them to release which is good but I guess that was one way of addressing the problem :)
Yep, I agree.

For the poachers, you need more enforcement and more severe penalties. We have them coming into Texas waters to fish illegally because they have depleted their own.

For the legal fishermen, make it all illegal. The new president may not be interested tho.

Sport fishing for sharks with a catch and release program works in the right direction as it brings in mucho money to the local community, helps promote a healthy management of the natural resource, since without it there is no income. Sport fisherman are the ones you want on your side in this battle, they have money and voice and are on the right side of the equation, they want protection not eradication.

If rule of law is absent from this part of Mexico, you may as well accept all the implications of that fact. Beyond paying off the local authorities to handle the problem, I submit that it's a big ocean and I'm sure there are people capable of stopping him. Whether that's an action anyone is willing to take is a separate question that can only be resolved locally. Good luck and/or hunting.
